The book really helped me think of ANYTHING as potential crafting material (before I had assumed I'd need to find a willow tree somewhere). The book also has a LOT of designs and tips (I didn't even know rib baskets existed!). That being said, I wish it had had a larger section on different material types. It DID give info on specific plants you could harvest (when to harvest, what parts to harvest, general uses, etc), but it'd be nice to have a "these are challenges specific to using soft material like grass, these are challenges to using rigid materials like hard wood". In the text there would be occasional references to more rigid material being harder on the hands, but it would have been nice for an entire section on things like that.For example, I'm trying to make a twining grass basket (since the book says that grass stems are good for that)...but it can be hard to keep the spokes of the basket stiff enough to keep the shape, but flexible enough to not crease or even break. SHOULD I be making the whole basket out of grass? Should I make the spokes out of something more firm? Should I avoid soaking the spokes at all? It would be nice if the book had a section to answer such questions.
It's an excellent book. It thoroughly covers what plants provide basketry material. This is particularly important to a Permaculturist because in Permaculture design, every element in it must have multiple uses. Providing fibers for baskets is one of those elements not usually considered in a garden design. It's a superior resource and reference book for that information besides providing inspiration for using all the vines, grasses etc. around the environment in beautiful baskets.
I bought this used first time I did it and I am very pleased and what a great saving. It is a very big and detailed book and alot of reading I am a visual person so it does not have lots of pictures but the basic ideas and information that is very helpful and happy I got this book... I am currently gathering my leaves, sticks and vines so complete a basket.
I have really enjoyed it. A great book with easy instructions on many types of foliage and designs.
This is an excellent book for the period (1991). A couple of the directions could be a bit more clear. Interweave Press has always published exceptional books. It's a good investment if you enjoy this kind of craft.
