Used this guide in planning my trip to Alaska this summer. Was very happy. Didnt steer us to many touristy things but gave us the real low down on what to do and more importantly, what to avoid.

This book is fantastic just what I was looking for to plan my next summer's multiple hiking adventures in ALASKA.

If you're going to Southcentral Alaska (i.e., anywhere within 100 or so miles of Anchorage, including the Kenai Peninsula) a much more comprehensive and useful book is 55 Ways to the Wilderness in Southcentral Alaska by Helen Niehauser (sp?). Unlike 55 Ways, Dufresne's book does cover the whole state, but it lists only a small number of hikes, and they are all multi-day trips, some of them requiring good route-finding skills. It also appears that Dean Littlepage's (sp?) book on hiking in Alaska has statewide coverage and lists many more hikes than this book, though I have only thumbed thru the TOC of that one. On the other hand, Dufresne knows his stuff, writes engagingly, and describes some renowned multi-day hikes in depth. I took a longish trip to Alaska hiking the trails he recommended and had a wonderful time.

This book contains sections for each geographical area of Alaska. It gives background on the area, tells you what types of permits you will need to hike, what transportation is available, etc. It also suggests several trails in each area. The book also contains a 100 page section on Alaska in general - history, facts, wildlife, transportation, etc. A great book if you want to plan a trip to Alaska but need to figure out which part of the state to go to. Not as useful if you want a lot of detail about a specific region.

I loved this book. In fact, I could not help but to write in the margins about many of my own personal experiences that agreed with with the author's contention which was that the XP is little more than a fraud which is foisted off on the industry by shallow depth programmers who don't really know how to develop complex applications but who do know how to sell ideas to management.It's easy by the way: just lie and tell everyone what they want to hear. People want to believe you have a magic solution to their problems so they won't examine your trite, off-the-cuff replies claiming to answer their questions.Amusingly, a couple of years after this book became popular, I noticed that it's web site had been merged with the main XP promoting website. Apparently, the author of the book was willing to sell out for a buck. By having his website included with the main site, he could get more traffic and make more book sales.The main XP site now has a long section that claims to address the issues that this book brings up. You'll have to read it for yourself and see if they have really been able to answer the author's original claims.If you care about the software development process, buy this book. Understand it's arguments, then check out the main XP website.

In buying "Extreme Programming Refactored: The Case Against XP", I expected a critical (case against XP), yet constructive (refactored), view on this popular Agile development methodology. What I found instead were copious amounts of sarcasm, irrelevant song lyrics, and enough icons and sidebars to make you lose track of the topic. To this you add a plethora of out-of-context quotes, web screen prints, and tales from disgruntled practitioners and you start hoping that you will soon get to the counter-proposal so that you can finally understand what the authors have to offer. After having read fourteen chapters (about time since the book only contains 16), you finally get to `Refactoring XP'...I am sorry to report that this chapter did not make up for the rest of the book. The counter-proposal was weak, unconvincing, and seemed to proposed more of a `RUP a la XP' than a constructive criticism of XP itself.

I skipped all of the satire and jokes. The book has a lot of good content otherwise and makes valid points against some of the xp practices. I have experience with pair programming and that section matched with my experience.

This book presents some interesting thoughts on XP and some possibly useful suggestions on how to temper some of the more extreme practices in XP. However, it's full of unsubstantiated opinion, inaccurate statements, and unnecessary vitriol. If you hate XP and are looking for sympathy, you'll enjoy the venom in this book. But if you're looking for reasoned criticisms and objective insights, this is not the book.

This book makes an easy criticism of extreme programming. It is funny at times but you feel underneath the writing of two over architecturing programmers who were scared of going the extra mile and being a little constructive with their criticism.There is no useful information in this book, just some fun poking at misleading interpretations of extreme programming.If you are an ego filled, spaghetti coder, searching for an excuse to poke fun of the daring new generation of cooperative programmers stealing your job. This is your book.

[Reviewed by XPSD member Sunitha Dangeti]Having practiced XP, I particularly like two chapters in this book, one on XP in a nuthouse which is a good read for someone who is new to XP to get a quick understanding of the XP concept and the next one is the chapter on XP refactored in which the authors point out good features of XP along with their own best practices added and ideas that may make XP better.This book is an extreme view of Extreme programming. The authors have criticized almost every aspect of Extreme programming. Any developer thinking of following the methodology would be discouraged to do so if they came across this book first.They take a very rigid stand on refactoring, picturing as if XP programmers are in a constant refactoring frenzy for no good reason. Lack of initial design has been pointed out as being responsible for lot of rework. Release early, release often concept has been shown to increase the developer's concern of whether it will integrate into the system and satisfy all the tests or not.They point out that XP is not scalable and is only suitable for small projects. Though most of the XP projects are small, I know the above statement is not entirely true as I heard a success story of a big project which was migrating and had a strict production deadline to meet which it did.The authors picked examples from instances where the coders did not take care of situations. For example, they comment on unit tests saying that unit tests are stand alone in XP and often left databases dirty. The developer in that instance may not have had roll back statements in the test which is why the database was left dirty and hence it is not a flaw with XP methodology but a flaw with the way it was implemented.By the end of the book, the authors refactor XP and delineate the pros and cons of each XP component in which they mention the following points: * Pair programming should not be constant or mandatory * Programmers should design * Programmers should write their own tests * Instead of continuous design, we should follow frequent design * 40 hr weeks are not feasible as sometimes developers have to work overtime to meet deadlines * Coding, testing, listening and designing of XP are worth salvaging * Iterations should be one month long * Test first design should complement the design but should not drive it * Use a combination of requirements and use cases instead of user stories * Project velocity should be measured in terms of formal requirements completed per iteration rather than user stories per iterationOverall, I thought it was a fairly good though quick read for me
