Third in a series of books that explain what really does seem to be the fastest way around a track. Take the time to understand these and you will know how to optimize almost any corner, with the 3rd in the series (this one) explaining connected turns.

good read, to help see what real racing about.

excellent tips on driving curves

I bought this for my son in law for a gift. He was very excited to use the book to help his corner driving at his races!

good book

I have read dozens of books on track driving, and have been driving on track for 20 years and I and find this author's explanations very cryptic. I would not buy

Perfect corner 1 and 2 as well as perfect control are full of info that are written in other books, but these books are written in a laborious and sometimes very confusing fashion.

This book is the third in a series, and picks up where the others leave off by covering topics such as connected and complex turns, so that we can understand how to optimize a track as a whole. All three books are must-reads for anyone serious about optimizing their performance/race driving, and the three books should be read in order. There's a lot of physics embedded in these books, and though it's explained patiently and intuitively, the reader needs to do their part in really studying the books - this isn't light reading. But if you want to understand not only how to drive optimally, but also *why* certain things are optimal, there's no substitute for delving into the physics. Remember, if driving well was easy, it wouldn't be challenging and fun!Do I need to say more? Order the three books, read them carefully and repeatedly, and be prepared for your driving to be transformed. I'm aware of no other resources on driving which compare with these books.

Let me start off by saying that I have a degree in fine art and NOT computer science or anything else that's related to computers. With that out of the way, I can honestly say that the author of this book is methodical, concise, and complete in his descriptions. If you're looking for a picture book with drawings and diagrams you may want to look somewhere else.I will say that I approached this book with an absolute basic understanding of the concept of a variable, a string and that was about it. I had tried to read/surf the net about functions, classes, and loops but never really found a definitive source that could explain the concepts for my "art" brain to digest. This book has answered the call. I'm sure you've read similar statements but I'll say it again, don't expect to learn a programming language after reading a couple of pages and copying some code. I'm starting chapter 3 after having the book for approx. 1 week and I have a solid understanding of variable types, cout, cin, how to perform basic arithmetic in C++, calling functions, and parameters just to name a few. For a person with a creative and not-so-computer tech mindset, this is a major accomplishment. The pacing is nice if you're willing to read the material, review, and actually do the exercises at the end of the chapters. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase and confidently learning C++ thanks to this book.If I have just one criticism I would say that I wish there were answers for every exercise question. I understand the reasoning for not having answers to all of the exercise problems(the amount of pages it would take to create the answers would be insane). Still, there is an answer key for the review questions and some of the exercises.

I took several C++ Program In Computing courses while in college, and I must say, this book did a fantastic job of turning the what was then "clear as mud" concepts to something I could understand.Since those courses, I've learned C and a few other languages, but this book does a fantastic job of introducing OO concepts to a programmer, or a beginner who was otherwise doing procedural programs, or was just starting fresh. Lafore goes over the benefits of OO, and slowly builds on top of concepts throughout the book until you get a good overall understanding of the theory and the practice. Two things I didn't like about the book:1. There was very little discussion about doing things the "right way". By this, I mean, Lafore didn't really mention how certain methods of writing programs were less efficient than others. It looks like he was using the best practices in the book, so maybe that would have been overkill, but going a bit more in depth about why to do certain things certain ways would have been nice. While this is a beginner book, it certainly doesn't hurt to have sidenotes of this nature for those interested.2. While the majority of the code in this book was portable to most platforms, it's still assumed that you're going to be on a Windows plaform, and Lafore uses several Windows-only graphics libraries to illustrate some points. Being a UNIX guy, I would have preferred that he stick to a platform neutral explanation.

Had to buy this book for a programming class. Still useful today since i forgot a lot of things. AWesome book.

The writing is thorough and easy to read. The book has helped iron out the wrinkles in my patchwork C++ knowledge. However, the book is written with frequent examples of code to illustrate the points being made. These code sections are very difficult to read because the lines wrap around due to the book page being wider than the Kindle screen. Computer code, of all things, has to be very precise, and the unfortunate formatting harms the readability and prevents the reader from being able to develop a feel for what good code should look like. Still, the book has been helpful in spite of the examples, and I would recommend it.PS - Setting the Kindle to display horizontally and shrinking the font will pretty much eliminate the wrapping problems. This is a good solution if you can tolerate reading the rest of the text in this mode as well. Changing the settings for every example would be tedious at best because the examples are so frequent.

Good, but has typos and mistakes in code samples, sometimes you'll see things like char * str = new char[length + 1]; but then author does delete str; instead of delete [] str; so watch out for those things and read everything carefully! Other than that it's a really great book, if you read this book to the end, I strongly suggest you read Scott Meyers' Effective C++ series (Effective C++, More Effective C++, Effective STL), I personally ordered those 3, and also The Boost C++ Libraries: Generic Programming by Sergei Nakariakov and C++ Templates: The Complete Guide by David Vandevoorde after I read this book.

I bought this book long time ago when I was a student, but had not read it seriously. However, I started to read this book a month ago because of my job duty. Then I found that this book is excellent in helping readears understand essenctial conepts and principles which are required for C++ programming. The reasons why I am thinking like that are as below. This book explains 'why' as well as 'how', describing what's happening inside of system or C++ compiler. Each chapter starts off with some possible real-programming issues that we may face, then moves to fundamental and essential concepts, which make me think about some applications of the contents. Example codes which are shown in this book are very easy and clear, but very helpful for understanding concepts and principles which are very essential.I strongly recommend you to read this book to be an expert in C++ programming.

Robert Lafore is the best C++ teacher ever. I Have used his books since 1993, and would be at a loss without them. I read the chapter then copy his examples and work with them until I get them to run successfully. Finally working the exercises at the end of each chapter puts the iceing on the cake. I have tried other authors, but they don't come near presenting the material as clearly as Robert.

As a relative Sharepoint newbie who was given the task of setting up and deploying a sharepoint for our development group, I found this book to be a wonderful resource. I had already installed and deployed using the native wizards from Microsoft, but once I had time to read this book I realized that lathered were many things that MS glosses over in the installation. So much so that I scrapped my initial deployment and did it over 100% so I could utilize the processes presented in this book. One area that excelled is the section on setting up the search services. This is a critical and very powerful part of SharePoint 2013, and one that the native "wizard" does poorly, in my opinion. After going through the chapter on configuring the search services, I have a very well configured and stable foundation for this important service.Even though this book is directed more towards the Enterprise version (my organization uses the Standard version) it was still well worth the cost for the information provided.I would agree that some of the scripts would be far easier to use if they were available online, but this is a minor issue.

First and foremost, this was one of the first books out on SharePoint 2013. It straight forward, is easy to follow, well organized and is not padded with useless fluff. There are several nuggets that are helpful that I did not find anywhere else. It is great to have as a reference while building out your SharePoint farm. The only negative is there is a lot of powershell scripts which is great. It would have been great if they could have been downloaded. There is one chapter of code that can be downloaded. If they added the scripts from the other chapters, it would be very helpful.

Just start with the readability of the print as compared to "Pro SharePoint 2013 Administration" by Apress. Wrox knows how to make a book even us seniors will enjoy.I'f I'm supposed to have read the whole book to review--I'm not that advanced--massive sections go beyond what a developer trying to install his simple SharePoint 2013 system at home can fathom. What I did like, again using the other book I mentioned as a reference, the step by step treatment of bypassing the "Gray" and "White" Wizards.Even a lowly developer knows that if you just take the easy way through the wizards--nothing ends up being configured right. Also a really good PowerShell chapter with good examples. In fact there is more explanation in that one chapter than the book I bought "PowerShell for SharePoint 2013" by Sams.A really good chapter on "Configuring SharePoint for Business Intelligence". An a good overview of "Service Application Administration".I think I liked the book!!

I am a long time SharePoint admin and developer. What I liked most about this book was the step by step guide to installing SharePoint the RIGHT way. The product has gotten so big over the years that just to get the install right is a chore. This book will help you immensely! Follow the steps in this book and you will have all the features and components you need installed with clean database names, and most importantly, everything will be working the way it should. I've done many installs now using it and this is the book I grab whenever I am creating a new farm. In addition to the install information, there is a lot of other great information and a nice sample workflow. Overall a required book for the SharePoint professional.

Built a 2013 farm last week. Aside from a few areas lacking a few extra sentences [depth] explaining some service provisioning, I really like the way this book - especially the "Creating the Farm" Chapter 3 - is put together. We had TechNet/Google running side by side and more often referenced the book, except for a few "MS enhancements" [glitches] that you need some Googlin' to get through, just like 2010. I have not got too deep into the "BI" chapters yet, but thus far the book has paid for itself in pre-planning and being a well organized 'in the hand' tool for building a SharePoint 2013 Farm.

This books has good coverage of the fundaments of SharePoint administration. Shane and Todd are excellent resources. You can pick a lot up by referring to their blogs. Todd's net cast is an excellent way to stay up to speed on current issues. Todd has a great sense of humor and the chat room during the show can be a lot of fun.My only critique of this book is that is doesn't go into more advanced and complex configuration issues like using the Access Control Services for authentication. Perhaps, that's content best suited for an Advanced SharePoint 2013 Administration book.

Throughout my IT career, I've purchased many technical books for my professional library. This is one of a select few I've read cover-to-cover (Another one being the Professional SharePoint 2010 Administration book by the same authors). It's a pragmatic approach to SharePoint 2013 Administration written by authors who clearly have gained their experience and knowledge from working hands-on with the product. This book covers a lot of ground. Highlights for me: Important concepts any good SharePoint Administrator needs to understand, Upgrade to SharePoint 2013, PowerShell, Backup/Recovery, Troubleshooting and of course the new features introduced in SharePoint 2013 and what this means to me as a SharePoint Administrator. One of my favorite things is the tips and tricks disbursed throughout that really add to the overall learning experience of the book as well as lots of step-by-steps.This is sure to be my go-to book for SharePoint 2013 Administration.Kudos to the authors - job well done guys.

The Last Magician, by Lisa Maxwell

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—This fantasy chronicles the struggles of the last surviving magicians in a draconian world of gangs and perilous dangers. Esta is a master thief who manipulates time in order to steal artifacts, all in the service of stopping the Magician, who means to kill the remaining Mageus—members of a secret order of magicians. Esta must keep an all-powerful book away from the villain to prevent him from destroying her order. She also needs to avoid "the Brink," a mystical barrier that causes her kind to lose their powers and become trapped. This novel will be quite the undertaking for most readers, as the main character jumps back and forth through time. The narrative is told from different points of view as various arcs come together during the climactic final struggle. Readers may find it hard to follow this long, intricate narrative. Hard-core magic and fantasy devotees might enjoy this ambitious tale, but more casual fans will be better served by the works of Maggie Stiefvater and Cassandra Clare. VERDICT Purchase where high fantasy is in demand.—Brian Hoff, Elmwood Park High School, IL

Review

"This twisty tale of alchemy and magic in Gilded Age New York will keep you guessing until the very last page."  (Cinda Williams Chima, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author)"A gorgeous, timeless, all-consuming tale." (Wendy Higgins, New York Times bestselling author of the Sweet Evil series)"A twisty, spellbinding romp. Inserting feuding magical factions into an already tumultuous time in American history, Maxwell’s The Last Magician mesmerized me until the very last page."  (Janet B. Taylor, author of Into the Dim and Sparks of Light)"Intriguing, romantic, and full of twists, THE LAST MAGICIAN kept me reading late into the night. The richly imagined alternative version of 1901 New York City pulled me in, but the fascinating characters had me turning the pages, desperate to find out what happened to them." (Anne Blankman, author of the Prisoner of Night and Fog duology)Gangs, immigrants, and the rich keeping the poor down, with a twist. In an alternate New York, magic is wielded by the Mageus, whose innate affinities vary widely, and the Order, who disdain but use magic in rituals that limit the Mageus' freedom. For centuries, Mageus have entered but cannot leave Manhattan thanks to the Brink, a magical barrier surrounding the island. Esta's affinity involves manipulating time, and the professor who raised her has sent her from the present day to 1901 to stop the destruction of a book that could potentially destroy the Brink. Shifting third-person perspective follows Esta into the past as she infiltrates Dolph Saunders' gang and becomes involved with Harte Darrigan, the handsome magician who destroyed the book. Crisp pacing and plenty of details tell the story of engaging, if selfish, characters in their late teens and early 20s working at cross purposes for big reasons. The past is slightly romanticized but largely realistic: the Mageus function as a stand-in for any immigrant group subject to prejudice, and Esta's contemporary attitudes shine a light on outdated attitudes, while through the experiences of Chinese Jianyu (the only nonwhite member of Dolph's gang), some of the racial prejudices of the past are confronted. A doorstopper with a total shakeup of an ending: don't miss this splendid series opener. (map) (Historical fantasy. 12-adult)  (Kirkus Reviews 5/1/17)In the present day, those with an affinity for magic, the Mageus, remain in hiding, but it has long been speculated that if someone can go back in time and get a significant book, then the fates of the Mageus across history would be changed. Esta, a talented thief, has been trained for the job, so she’s sent back to 1901 and Old New York to snatch the book and save the Mageus. She’s distracted by what she believes is a tragedy that happened just as she time traveled away from the pres- ent, and by the brooding, mysterious, and handsome magician she resists loving in 1901, but she never fully loses track of her ultimate goal. For a capable thief, Esta is surprisingly bad at reading others, but the author effectively paints her as someone whose understanding is limited by the role for which she was raised. As there are significant plot reveals all the way through (we actually learn a secret about Esta’s dad, for example, only about twenty pages from the end), the book never loses urgency, and readers will likely hit the final page wishing for more. Hand this off to fantasy buffs who appreciate historical fiction, since a good deal of the novel takes place in the early twentieth century, and Maxwell’s attention to detail makes that time period seem vivid and compelling.  (BCCB June 2017)The age-old battle between the Order of Ortus Aurea, who think magic can be created, and the Mageus, whose magic is innate, is intensifying; and each side is trying to collect magical tools to gain control—including the powerful text known as the Ars Arcana. Esta (Mageus), trained as a time-traveling thief, is sent back to early twentieth-century New York to prevent the book’s destruction at the hands of a mysterious person known only as the Magician. This stripped down plot summary does no justice to the captivating and complicated story created by Maxwell. A mix of historical fiction, romance, fantasy, and magic, the well-plotted and tightly paced story moves between present day and 1901 New York, a time of gangs, tenements, turf wars, and a fascination with science and technology as a cure for society’s ills. A few historical figures make an appearance, J. P. Morgan, for example, but this is definitely Esta’s story, and she is a smart and feisty female protagonist in whom readers will delight. — Cindy Welch (Booklist online May 31, 2017)

I really wanted to like this book. It came highly recommended by 2 of my favorite YouTube book reviewers. But, this ended up being a real slog to get through, and I probably won't be buying the 2nd book in the series.Pacing. This book is fairly lengthy for YA. It begins fairly briskly, but then s-l-o-w-s down for the next several hundred pages, before rushing to an incomplete ending. The central heist takes a back seat to long descriptions of the world; these are well written, and quite engaging, but the heist itself, and the magic-world, receive little commentary. As other reviewers have noted, the "magic" is mostly concealed--so, the 3rd person narrator doesn't really describe the magic, it's uses, consequences, etc.Characters: I had real problems with the heroine, Esta. She's been trained since childhood in unarmed combat and theft by stealth. But, she has no discipline, and argues with teammembers during critical times (frequently in the midst of hazardous operations). If someone grabs her by the arm, she is helplessly captured, and cannot break free. The author writes her into some really dangerous situations, but Esta's reactions are more damsel-in-distress than trained and experienced thief. For all characters, no one trusts anyone else, and this is repeated throughout the book, and frequently. Romance is at the grade-school level, though this is YA lit, and the actors are young adults. There is a lesbian almost-couple, but that is all implied, and never realized. The Asian major character is a highlight, and the European immigrants are also well protrayed, but these are generally the exceptions.Gender. Even though Esta--our main character--is certainly a young woman, most of the female characters are weak. Even Esta is continually abused, and assualted. There are several deaths; most of them are women. Most of the deprivation is suffered by women. Now, this may have been historically accurate, but the result can be dark and relentless. The author does write well, and I found the generic world-building beautifully descriptive, if dark. I do wish the magical world received the same attention. I mostly wish the young-adult characters weren't artificially hamstrung with low maturity.

PLOTSome of you may have already noticed my header but for those that haven’t, this will be for all intents and purposes be a Gush Review! The Last Magician was after my heart with its magic infused Gangs of New York/Six of Crows vibes *heart eyes emoji*We get introduced to our main protagonist Esta who is a Mageus with the ability to time travel. As an orphan Esta was taken in and trained by Professor Lachlan to steal magical artifacts. The purpose of each task is to prepare her for her toughest and take her back the furthest in time…going back to New York City 1902. Esta has studied many different languages, fashions, ways of life but nothing will prove as challenging as the early 1900’s. So much depends on her succeeding in stealing the Ars Arcana aka the oldest book of magic out of 1902 & getting it back to professor Lachlan. The Ars Arcana contains many of the oldest secrets of magic & is protected by The Order, an elite society created to protect the city against magic by way of the Ars Arcana and The Brink. At the very edge of the city is The Brink which serves as a barrier to contain those with magical abilities inside NYC. Those who have dared to cross it have either died or been left as empty vessels of their former selves unable to live life stripped from their magic. Esta travels back to 1902 to steal the Ars Arcana before The Magician can get away with it altering Present time for the worse.Much of the book is spent in 1902 due to unforeseen circumstances & since this was a time where Old magic was alive & vibrant, the city is crawling with hidden Mageus. For Esta this comes as a surprise since in present time NYC where she comes from, much of the Old magic no longer exists having been weakened through the passage of time & generations. Esta finds her way into one of the gangs roaming the streets of NYC who happen to all be Mageus by using her abilities to prove her worth. I LOVED EVERYTHING about this plot line! Maxwell covered everything so well from gang rivalry, politics, and the slums of the Lower East side Manhattan to the Mageus and each of their individual abilities. I was sucked in from the very 1st page!CHARACTERSEsta- Our main protagonist is a Feminist Mageus with the ability to time travel & manipulate time…need I say more? HAHA! On a serious note, seeing her in 1902 NYC surrounded by men who viewed women as the inferior sex gave readers a realistic view of the times. Misogyny wasn’t a word being thrown around, it was the norm. Esta at times found herself scoffing at comments made at her more risqué choice of clothing only to remind herself that these people are a product of their time. Esta is also very loyal, smart and plays her cards close to her chest which made her an instant fave of mine.Harte Darrigan- Not a part of anyones gang really, he’s a loner with a dark past & an even more messed up childhood. Harte is also a Mageus (won’t spoil his affinity since its spoilery) & is completely taken aback by Esta, a woman so ahead of her times that he can’t spend more than 5 minutes around her w/out turning 50 shades of red & yea I enjoyed their interactions a ton! Harte also has his own agenda that may or may not be an issue for Esta…Dolph Saunders- The leader of the gang Esta joins & this character has that Kaz Brekker feel but he’s def way more cold hearted when need be. Dolph is a man carrying around his regrets & on a mission for vengeance by way of freeing all Mageus from the constraints of The Brink & The Order. He’s only interested interested in your loyalty & your affinity otherwise you have no seat at his table.Nibs- The right hand young man Dolph keeps around handling the finances at the bar where he conducts all matters of business. Dolph trusts Nibs more than he does anyone else & often will look to him for their next move ;)Viola- LOVE HER! described as Italian with dark hair & lavender colored eyes, Viola is sick with blades & her affinity is very valuable. She also happens to be the sister of another major gang boss. Dolph offered her a home & safety once her family turned against her. Viola is a lesbian & these times were no where near as accepting as Present time. I really wanted to see this character get her happy ending but understood that it wouldn’t be true to the time.Jianyu- A man more comfortable hidden within the shadows he is VERY valuable as well. Jianyu is the equivalent of Varys The Spider on Game of Thrones only not as manipulative lol. He is observant & similarly to Viola, has a family head who is the head of a gang in Chinatown. Jianyu however, opted for the lesser of two evils with Dolph ;)WRITING & FINAL THOUGHTSI’ve always been a fan of time pieces & seeing YA books dipping into Historical Fiction has been so much fun! this YA Historical Fiction/Fantasy was EVERYTHING I never knew I needed! Seeing my city back in the 1900’s was a real treat sans the misogyny of course lol. The inclusivity of such diverse characters did not go unnoticed, the author had bits and pieces of other languages giving the characters that fleshed out feel I LOVE! It was interesting reading a diverse Fantasy that also shed light on the inequalities that existed during the 1900’s. Maxwell calls The Last Magician a “behemoth” of a book in the Authors Afterward & that it is but I enjoyed every minute I spent in this world. I can see this heist playing out on the big screen with flashes of old NYC & present day modern NYC, I’d buy that ticket ASAP! This was my 1st Lisa Maxwell book & I’ve fallen in love with her writing! I’ve heard mention that this is a standalone & yet THAT ENDING! bookworms…dare I grasp on to hope for more? I really hope we get at least a Duology *fingers crossed**Huge thanks to Simon & Schuster, Netgalley, & Lisa Maxwell for the eGalley copy of The Last Magician in exchange for an honest review
