Great to read Garfield as an adult. Still holds up. If you love the cartoons as a kid, the comics still have same charm.

A book about a fat cat, an incompetent owner and a drooling dog can always make my day. I love this book it is funny and it does have some good vocabulary words. I love these books and I am in sixth grade.

This is not the actual book Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. It is actually a collection of speeches and essays about the REAL book and a summary of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. That fact wasn't stated anywhere on the selling page.

It's presumptuous for Amazon to ask someone to "review" a classic of literature ... but I'd simply like to point out that in my opinion Stevenson is one of the great masters of light, elegant Entertainment Lit during its last great blossoming: Victorian England. Of course even the greatest classic English lit (ie Shakespeare's plays) were designed as entertainment: the more pompous, formal, ponderous moralistic stuff (like Johnson) survives only in academic circles and was probably endured rather than enjoyed even back in the day. But Stevenson is as pure an entertainer as Fred Astaire: breathtaking, charming, playful, he's chock full of of small, masterful asides but, like Stephen King's, they thrill and amuse but in no way distract as the tale races along -- they're like white water in the rapids. See for yourself: just find the first page of Jekyll and Hyde anywhere online and skim it -- you'll find it just feels like skimming, you'll be in a whole new world with a witty genius for a guide..

I love a good story of a mad scientist. It is told from the third person perspective of Dr. Jekyll's close friend Mr. Utterson. It's funny to me how long it took for him to put the idea together, though having heard of this story long before I read it, I imagine the thought of someone being two different people is hard to fathom.Still, I enjoyed the surmounting evidence piling up for the real story and especially found it funny that Mr. Utterson had in his possession a letter that would explain things (even a little) very early on from Lanyon.I expected the book to be told from Dr. Jekyll's point of view but I really liked that it focused on a concerned friend trying to understand what was going on with a mysterious will.

I am reading Stevenson's complete tales chronologically, so this is my second volume, after _New Arabian Nights_. In this review, I will focus on the tales included in _The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables_, as the book is in fact titled. For general comments on Stevenson, please see my review of _New Arabian Nights_, in which I comment, among other things, on Stevenson's ability to entertain his readers, a gift that so many writers, even so many popular writers, lack._The Merry Men_ (1887), a collection of 6 tales, is a worthy successor to _New Arabian Nights_ (1882). I do not find either one to be "better" or "worse" than the other; they are both equally pleasing and entertaining, and both are excellent examples of Stevenson's seductive narrative voice, a voice that combines suspense with vivid descriptions and a touch of humor. This mixture results in some of the most readable stories in the English language, as authors such as G. K. Chesterton, Jorge Luis Borges, Jack London, and Ernest Hemingway have remarked. The two collections are, furthermore, equally wide in scope, including elements of adventure, satire, parody, allegory, and the supernatural. I will comment on the stories included:* The Merry Men: The title, as has been observed, refers to a particularly dangerous group of waves. The story takes place in an island, to which the protagonist, Charlie, retires. Aros, a farm on the island, is the property of Charlie's uncle Gordon, whose daughter, Mary, Charlie wishes to marry. Aros is famous for the shipwrecks that take place nearby, due to the "merry men," so Charlie is not only pursuing Mary, he also hopes to find the treasure of the sunken Spanish ship Espirito [sic, should be "Espíritu"] Santo. A great story, reminiscent of "The Pavilion on the Links," from _New Arabian Nights_.* Will o' the Mill: A story in three parts, this is one of those narratives that cover the entirety of a character's life. Will lives in the country, and wishes to see the world. His life is changed when he notices Marjory, the parson's daughter. I found this to be an excellent story, and I must say it is not as predictable as may appear from the description. The good thing about "life-stories" is that they allow you to observe the destiny of a character, and Stevenson lets you draw your own conclusions from Will's life journey.* Markheim: Borges included this story, along with the entire _New Arabian Nights_ collection, in one of the volumes of his "biblioteca personal." This is one of Stevenson's most famous stories, on the same level as "A Lodging for the Night" and "The Bottle Imp." I cannot say much about it without giving away the plot. Let me just say the story relies on the unexpected, and by reading the first two or three pages you would never expect what's coming. One of the gems in Stevenson's oeuvre.* Thrawn Janet: A rare piece, as it is written in Scots! I understand there is only one other story that Stevenson wrote in this language, but it appears to be an uncollected tale. "Thrawn Janet" is a creepy ghost story, not a very profound one, but very entertaining nevertheless. The language may pose a slight challenge, but I am an ESL student and I had no trouble at all understanding the story. (The reason why I call myself an ESL student, by the way, is that I believe one does not simply stop being an ESL student; learning a second language is a wonderful life-long process, no matter how advanced one may be.)* Olalla: According to Borges, Stevenson got the idea for this story from a dream. "Olalla" takes place in Spain, and this tale is another achievement in setting construction. A convalescing soldier stays at the estate of a very strange Spanish family, composed of a very basic son, his mother, and his mysterious, elusive sister, Olalla. The ominous presence of an uncanny portrait is an excellent addition to the plot. A compelling read, this was my favorite story in the collection.* The Treasure of Franchard: Stevenson ended _New Arabian Nights_ on a lighter note with "Providence and the Guitar." He follows the same effective formula in this collection, with "The Treasure of Franchard," and in this case, with much greater success. This is a simply hilarious story about a family that adopts a boy who has the reputation of being a thief. The tale is mainly about the effects that wealth can have on a family. The story points to--and even lampoons, though respectfully--the work of Edgar Allan Poe._New Arabian Nights_ inspired me to read all of Stevenson's tales. _The Merry Men_ has increased my enthusiasm for the work of the immortal Tusitala, or "Teller of Tales," as the Samoans called Stevenson. Both of these works will fascinate lovers of the traditional short story. I look forward to reading _Island Nights' Entertainments_ (1893), the last collection of Stevenson stories to appear in the author's lifetime, and will share my reaction to it in a review. Thanks for reading, and enjoy the book!

I read a lot of sailing-adventure books. I started with Melville's books about sailing (Moby Dick and White Jacket are my favorites), then found books like Kon Tiki and The Seed Buried Deep. There are a lot of good sailing books out there, but I think this one is the best. The narrator is unassuming, stalwart, and an amazing sailer. I'm talking late 19th century sailing, when people navigated by the stars, didn't have GPS or sat-phones, and even did all their own repairs.Perhaps what I love most about this adventure is how it starts, and I'll mention that since it won't give much away: The captain of the book starts out by being given an old wreck of a ship, and he spends several months repairing it, rebuilding it, and reinventing the vessel. It's a great story overall about a guy who can literally do it all.Of all the sailing books I've read, I like this one the most. Reading it, you truly feel like (with the proper experience and know-how), you could sail the globe and have a good time doing it.

Even though I've never lived within 400 miles of an ocean, I once entertained the notion of setting off in a sailboat, my own man, as free as the wind. The first man to do it all alone and around the world was Joshua Slocum, in the 1890s. He was not only a skilled sailor with 30 years experience on the sea, but an excellent writer, as this book attests. On his first leg, from Cape Sable to the Azores, he manages to convey the sense of what it was like Out There: a world apart, a world of endless sky and wind, of heaving waves, sea and sky and nothing more.Equally impressive was Slocum's knowledge of the world's oceans. He knew the ocean currents and the winds as well as a man might know the hills and valleys where he lives. He is not above "tooting his own horn" with regard to his seamanship. But as they say in sports, if you can do it, it ain't bragging. The reader unfamiliar with sailing might want to keep a dictionary handy. When sentences like "I shook out a reef, and set the whole jib, for, having sea-room, I could square away two points" are encountered, one can make out what he's saying if necessary. But even if you don't know a halyard from a bowsprit, you can still enjoy a rollicking good tale.

Very entertaining. Thoroughly enjoyed the upbeat pace of this adventurous read. I found myself smiling and even laughing while reading it. Surprisingly well done. Interesting info about sailing, the lingo, the challenge, the adventure, and what it's like from the first person to circumnavigate the planet, by 'Sailing Around the World'! I recommend this book.

"I had resolved on a voyage around the world. ... A thrilling pulse beat high in me. My step was light on deck in the crisp air. I felt there could be no turning back, and that I was engaging in an adventure the meaning of which I thoroughly understood. " So says Captain Joshua Slocum in the beginning of this remarkable first-person account of a three-year, 46,000 mile adventure, the likes of which not only made his book an international sensation but also a staple of public school reading lists for generations after.A Nova Scotian by birth and naturalized American, Slocum came from families of sailors on both sides. Alhough he spent his life at sea (on coastal fishing vessels and commercial ships, working his way up to a captaincy in his 40s, and had numerous adventures in so doing), by his own admission he had not done that much solo sailing, where every action, both for safety and for progress, was in his hands alone, yet he seemed undaunted by the challenge. His feat was astounding in numerous ways, from how he took a disused oyster boat that had lain in a field outside Fairhaven, Massachusetts (across the mouth of the Acushnet River from the great sailing port of New Bedford), redesigned and rebuilt it himself from the keel up, and without a chronometer (he used instead a $1 tin clock) used dead-reckoning for his longitude, to the numerous brushes with doom along the way. It's easy to see why the English writer Arthur Ransome said, "Boys who do not like this book ought to be drowned at once."For those who love sailing or adventure, Slocum's page-turning account satisfies from beginning to end, and though he never says precisely what motivated him at the age of 51 to circumnavigate the globe, alone, in a converted oyster boat of just over 36 feet, one gets a clear sense of an answer before the end. His straightforward, matter-of-fact style cannot hide what seems apparent - he loved the sea and, through that, life as journey. Other facts gleaned from outside reading support that conclusion - he had spent his life on ships, had sailed everywhere, and had seen both the golden age of sail (barks, brigantines, clipper ships of all sizes plying the oceans of the world and filling their harbors with groves of masts and spars) as well as its sad eclipse by the dully efficient and ugly age of steamships. Furthermore, a wife and four children (all born at sea) were not enough to keep him on land. It brings to mind a few lines of Ulysses:How dull it is to pause, to make an end,To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!As tho' to breathe were life!Old age hath yet his honour and his toil;Death closes all: but something ere the end,Some work of noble note, may yet be done,Some work, indeed.

Review

Ever since Plato (who thought we laugh at vice), thinkers as serious as Kant and Freud have put forth theories of our giggles and guffaws. Hurley, Dennett, and Adams go at the problem with the ingenuity of first-rate scientists and the timing of first-rate comics. Not only do they have the riches of evolutionary psychology from which to draw, but they're even funnier than Hegel. (Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, author of 36 Arguments for the Existence of God: A Work of Fiction)The deft use of humor can win a mate, persuade an audience, or make a tyrant quake in his jackboots. Yet no one really understands why the human brain should respond so forcefully to that cocktail of anomaly, indignity, and rhythmic vocalization we call a joke. Hurley, Dennett, and Adams offer a sophisticated analysis of this important phenomenon using high standards of evolutionary explanation -- and no, it is not a turgid academic disquisition, but written with clarity, good cheer, and, of course, wit. (Steven Pinker, author of How The Mind Works)[O]ne of the most complex and sophisticated humor theories ever presented.... The authors should be lauded for their thought-provoking and original work. (Evolutionary Psychology)The theory [the authors] elaborate is a detailed and sophisticated descendant of incongruity theories.... The learned and even-handed stance adopted by [them] regarding problem cases is... upbeat: they regard their theory as a provisional staging post, and a prompt to further empirical enquiry into these open-ended issues. On balance, that is probably the right attitude to take. (The Times Literary Supplement) Inside Jokes is the most persuasive theory of humor in the centuries that scientists have been trying to explain why we crack up. Extra bonus: unlike most such research, which is about as funny as a root canal, Hurley's analysis is -- and I don't think I'm going out on too much of a limb here -- the funniest thing the MIT Press... has ever published (in a good way). (Sharon Begley The Daily Beast)Science advances by asking new questions, and Matthew Hurley, Daniel Dennett, and Reginald Adams raise a lot of them.... Some of these questions have been asked before, but no previous attempt succeeds in answering so many so well. (Walter Sinnott-Armstrong Science)Hurley and his crew cross the road to not just explain a joke, but explain all jokes. Before this book the only comedy that had been peer reviewed and replicated in double-blind experiments was the theory that there's nothing funnier than a smoking monkey. I'm so glad smart people outside of comedy are taking comedy seriously. (Penn Jillette of "Penn & Teller")MIT Press has come up with a page-turner, a book you can't put down. That is no joke! The authors have dissected the mental state of humor and, instead of dismissing it, instill awe about the beauty of the evolved human mind. Humor at its various levels cleans up our act and plays a magnificent role in making us who we are. (Michael Gazzaniga, Director, Sage Center for the Study of Mind, University of California, Santa Barbara)What's so funny about a robot with a sense of humor? In this highly original analysis, Hurley, Dennett, and Adams try to locate the holy grail, the essence of a joke, by using a variety of tools (from computer science, cognitive science, linguistics, philosophy, and even evolutionary psychology) to dissect why we laugh. This powerful team of authors goes a long way to explain why and when we laugh, and in doing so uncover insights about how the mind works. But like the proverbial millipede who, trying to analyze how he lifts each of his legs in the precise sequence, starts tripping over, readers should beware that getting inside a joke risks dehumorizing it! In this book the authors try to elucidate humor and how it may be implement in the brain and a machine. They also think that it speaks to the workings of the mind in more general terms. To start the book they take a stab at what humor is for and how it may have evolved. They then go into the phenomenology of humor (i.e. what it is like, what elicits it, how it is expressed, etc.). After this dissection they go through the various theories of humor that have been proposed and attempt to show how they are all wanting in some manner. Then there is a chapter asking twenty questions that they think any theory of humor would have to successfully answer. They then move on to their own theory, which is dependent on emotion and which maybe foundational (i.e. there would be no humor without it). They also think that all cognition involves emotion, but not only that, they think emotion is necessary for cognition. They claim such emotions as curiosity, puzzlement, surprise, and insight are key components for cognition. They then go into what kind of mind is necessary for humor to be appreciated and generated. Their next key ingredient is their claim that is the emotion of mirth that is the centerpiece emotion in humor. They then introduce the intentional stance, which has been most fully developed by one author, Daniel Dennett. The next thing they tackle is the possible objections to their theory. They then look at humors’ closer relations and what is the purpose of laughter. They wrap it up by giving the bare bones of what is needed to program a machine to express and appreciate humor with a necessary component being programming in emotions. Here are a few comments on specific parts of the text. Kindle locations are in brackets [].[2565] “While a description of a situation contains a series of concepts that refer to, or imply, possible beliefs in the situation, events translated into language are always a vast underspecification of reality, and some of the relevant issues are not made obvious from the surface form.” This lends support to my thinking that we do not actually think in language. I do not know if any of the authors would go this far.[3599] “There may be some justification, then, in old quip that ‘laughter is the best medicine’—humor just may play a role in healing depressive cycles.” It may improve the mood, and probably temporary at that, of the mildly depressed person. For the seriously depressed I doubt it even accomplishes this.[3781] They end on: “If we ever set out to produce a robot that has epistemic capacities strong enough to perform the kind of reasoning we do, we must endow it with something like humor and the other epistemic emotions.” This hardly amounts to a practical program of research. They do not even give an outline of what such a program would look like.I would agree with the authors’ premise that cognition, including cognition of humor, is dependent on the, what they call, the cognitive emotions. Their theory behind humor seems very plausible, but I suppose there are objections that they did not address in the book; although, they covered a lot of them. I do think they are guilty of a bit of oversell at the beginning promising a program to produce humor in a machine or robot in the last chapter. They admitted that it would not be an actual coded program, but still what they did in the last chapter could hardly be even considered a general program except in the sense of a broad plan of attack. I did enjoy the book, and it did include a lot of good jokes; although, not all were that funny by any means. If you are interested in what humor is, how it is produced, how it is received, why we have it at all, and why we find things funny, than I would recommend the book. Just do not expect a coded program for a computer or robot to generate and appreciate humor any where in the book.

This book examines the science of why we find funny what we find funny. Most people probably feel about this as did E.B. White who said, “Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested and the frog dies of it.” Still, while analyzing humor may not be as fun as reveling in it, it’s fascinating to scientifically inquiring minds.Humor is universal (not the humor of a specific joke, but the experience of somethings being humorous.) A skilled science fiction writer might conjure up an alien race that is credibly humorless. But it defies credulity that even the remotest of aboriginal Earthling wouldn’t giggle or guffaw at the sight of an off-course ball careening into an unsuspecting man’s crotch. Humor’s universality begs certain questions. First and foremost, one expects there to be some evolutionary advantage to a sense of humor. That evolutionary mechanism is precisely what Hurley, Dennett, and Adams attempt to demonstrate in this book. The authors suggest that the pleasure associated with humor is a reward for recognizing an incongruity, and they go into great deal to fill in the details needed to explain the panoply of things people find funny, while suggesting why alternate explanations are inferior. While there’s a lot of frog-killing academic analytics and needlessly messy scholarly language, this book does offer a vast collection of examples of humor to support and clarify the authors’ points. So, unlike many books on evolutionary and cognitive science, this book does have a built in light side. WARNING: there’s also a discussion of why some attempts at humor fail. This means one is also subjected to a number of puns, elementary school jokes, and comedic misfires that show the reader why sometimes humor implodes. The book starts by building a common understanding of what humor is. It turns out that this isn’t simple because people find many different kinds of things funny--from caricatures to wordplay. (And, whatever the initial evolutionary purpose of humor, our species has run with that reward system to places that couldn’t have been readily anticipated.) Next, the authors discuss the many varieties of theories of humor that have been raised. This subject has been studied for some time, and thinkers have suggested that humor’s pleasure derives from a number of different causes from feeling superior to recognizing surprise--just to name a couple. After considering the competition, Hurley et. al. start laying out the basis of a cognitive / evolutionary explanation. In chapter five they describe 20 questions they think must be dealt with, and--in the last chapter (13)--they give their responses as a summation of the book’s main points. Along the way, the authors take on important related questions such as why humor sometimes fails, what others will see as the weakness of their argument, whether a robot could be humorous, and why we laugh. The last point opens another can of worms. Even if one concludes--as the authors have--that humor is a reward system for recognizing incongruities, the question of why there is an advantage to spontaneously announcing that recognition still arises. There’re are a few graphics in the book, mostly these are cartoons and humorous photos that serve as examples. The book is published by MIT Press, so all the usual scholarly features of notes and citations apply.I found this book to be thought-provoking, and the plentiful examples of jokes made it enjoyable to read as well. I’d recommend it for those interested in the science of the mind. It’s a bit dry in places for readers looking for light reading about humor.
