Wonderfully helpful manual--yes, manual, as it really is that informative--for the aspiring performer. Only thing missing is the noticeable lack of advice for someone who isn't young. Cates doesn't address the feasibility of breaking into the entertainment world in middle age, but his overall tone is so positive and encouraging, you come away believing you could do it, no matter your age. If he had included just one paragraph dedicated to "late bloomers," or even the stupidity of trying to be one, I would've given the book 5 stars. But admittedly, I might be the only person alive who cares.

I read this book and wish I would have had this information 30 years ago when I was in my 20's and trying to figure out the music business. Adam does a GREAT job sharing his own wisdom and experience and explaining “insider information” that no one tells you about! The chapter “You Are a Small Business. Think Like a Small Business" was superb! He shares thoughts and interesting stories from a variety of professionals who have “been there and done that.” My husband is a high school choir teacher and musical director. A great, up to date book for the hopeful AND seasoned performers. The best parts are true stories from the pro's, which makes the book so relatable and humorous while being helpful at the same time. You can't make this stuff up! Sometimes reading about how other performers have floundered in an audition helps us all get through the hustle ourselves!

I think this book is an incredible resource for the young actors. I wish that I had this when I was in college. I gave it to my niece who is in her Freshman year of college as a theater major. I HIGHLY recommend it for the aspiring performer

Like a typical academic, I wanted to find a book to guide me on my way. I have sat in many a bookstore, looking at the shelves of books about auditioning, acting, Shakespeare, professional theatre, dance, etc. Choosing one was a daunting task. Then, after reading the introduction to The Business of Show, I knew this was the book for me... Everyone has a different story, a different path. This book shows how to turn big dreams into a journey and an inspired life.

"Work Purpose Coach" Jaeger, following Elaine Aron's The Highly Sensitive Person, insists that HSPs stand up for their right to be sensitive. She provides HSP readers with useful tips on how to monitor oneself, relax and set boundaries to avoid getting overwhelmed; how to face down office bullies; and, using carefully scripted model monologues, how to inform coworkers and supervisors of one's needs as an HSP (talk about "fatigue" rather than "depression," for example). Her goal is to help HSPs ascend from Drudgery, through the "purgatory" of Craft, to their true Calling-which involves "a blending of the intense mind with the love and joy of our imagination and emotions" and leads to being "lifted, inevitably, up toward Heaven." The book is most compelling in its descriptions of Drudgery, which draw on writers like Barbara Ehrenreich to detail what some have termed the "modern slavery" of the corporate workplace. Unfortunately, Jaeger's priority is less to reform the workplace than to survive or escape it, if necessary, through self-employment. HSPs are more sensitive not only to their physical environments but also to emotional trauma. Jaeger believes that about 20 percent of the population can be described as HSPs and that the personality type may be inherited. In discussing the work environment, Jaeger recommends that HSPs avoid drudgery, which is particularly devastating because HSPs are generally creative types who thrive on new challenges. Jaeger also advises that craftwork can quickly deteriorate into drudgery for HSPs, who often remain in a job they hate for too long because of commitments or fear. Instead, HSPs need to find more fulfilling work, which the author refers to as a calling. Jaeger says the particular needs of HSPs include stress management, rest and healing, learning the importance of saying no, and dealing with abusive co-workers. I read Elaine Aron's The Highly Sensitive Person, and I was looking for more info (already read other Aron books in this line). While Jaeger has a good idea, she is not a great writer, and her editor did not push enough to make this a well written work. Instead, it jumps around, leaves much unsaid, and in general leaves me frustrated. There is some good info in here. The presentation is not great. I keep thinking back to Grade 9 English class when I was taught how to write a report; wish Jaeger had taken that course and followed it, as she has the info, it is just not presented well.

This is a wonderful book for those that need a different point of view about work, engaging in meaningful work that matters, and is sustainable. Learning about HSP and the work setting that is discussed in this book, has made a world of difference fir me; giving hope and awareness that I can make a contribution and earn a viable salary in my field.

Very helpful and thought provoking for someone who finally realized that they are highly sensitive! Awesome read!!

doesn't give practical advice ....and definitely only for readers with a college education....for someone who is new to HSP...the ideas and opinions presented in this book will go over your heads...it has with me...and will cause one not to go further than the first chapter..

Getting past the cultural stigma attatched to the word sensitive, this is a Great book - for people who sense emotional situations and for those who find themselves learning to adjust to different personalities

Excellent choice for career insight and to understand HSPs. Also helpful if you work with bullies.

I find most self-help books not very helpful, because they're either lengthy expositions of extensive erudite findings, or else they're filled with sing-song dialogs with composite characters who purportedly achieved miraculous results, that you can too -- if you happen to be a composite character. Barrie's book is a refreshing change. I identified strongly with most aspects of being an HSP, and it helped me to understand why I'd been banging my head against a wall, assuming I was just like everyone around me, only not coping as effectively. I helped me to see patterns in my behaviour, and gave me a clear understanding of why they occur, and what I can do about them. While the definition of an HSP is quite broad, and somewhat unproven, Barrie takes the approach that the actual 'fit' of the profile is irrelevant, as long as the information is helpful. The techniques offered are mostly about entitlement, legitimacy, expressing anger in a healthy way, speaking up for yourself, and dealing with difficult people. These basic assertiveness skills can help you, even if you don't entirely fit the profile of the HSP. If you dread going to work because you'll feel awful when so-and-so does such-and-such, this book will illuminate your life tremendously.

I was excited to read a book on this topic but found this particular book to be poorly written. It has some good tips for HSP in it, but they are hidden behind a not very cohesive nor concise narrative.

My two year old doesn't stick around when we read this one but I love it as her mom, makes all the memories of the the day you gave birth come back with a smile

This is actually my favorite book in our children's private collection. At first I was not too thrilled with the pictures but over time they have grown on me...now they seem just perfect for the story. I noticed some reviews down the book because they feel it is too advanced for the age range suggeted; I personally disagree. In my opinion it is never too early to impart knowledge to our children. I particularly like that it involves the child in the story line so that they ASK what these things mean. I am surprised to see some (very few, yet some none the less) feel so differently about the book but I wanted to post in defense of the book because I feel it really is a true treasure. (Not that it really needed it at 4 1/2 stars...I just think it is 5 star worthy!) I also noticed one reader refer to the text as freakish. Wow! I am still trying to figure out how the text could be seen in that light!The intire book is full of text such as:On the day you were born the moon pulled on the ocean below, and, wave by wave, a rising tide washed the beaches clean for your footprints......while far out at sea clouds swelled with water drops, sailed to shore on a wind, and rained you a welcome across the Earth's green lands.I have never seen science explained in such a way for a small child and I think it was HIGH TIME!I just LOVE this book, and quite frankly, so do my 2 kids age 2 and 4!

My 3.5 year old daughter and I found this book in the doctor's office a few weeks ago. She asked me to read it, which I did...and then I immediately looked it up on Amazon for purchase. I like the message, spiritual but not religious...we really enjoy reading it together.

BEST baby book to give to new parents. Everyone cries every time. Happy tears. My daughter is 23 and I still read it to her and cry every time I read it. Make sure they do not open the book until the baby has arrived. When you read it you will understand why.

I received this book from a good friend when my baby boy was born (our first). I thought the poetry of birth and the natural world was amazing. And the ending where a circle of loved ones welcomed the new baby whispering "We're so glad you've come," reminded me of all the love our family and friends showed our new baby. I can't read it without tearing up. It's a wonderful reminder that all life is sacred and beautiful.While the art is tribal, not fluffy, and some of the language is advanced for a developing child, I still love this book. Not every board book should be pastels and one syllable words. But I hope this book will be a keepsake that we can read together and remember what a miracle it was that he was born. I want to foster in him the spirit of this book... that all life is connected and we need to try to live in balance with the environment that sustains our lives.

I had this book for my children, and now it goes out to grand babies and expecting moms. It is the tone of the book that catches me. It is also full of facts that eventually can be imparted to the growing child. The lines are loving and nurturing and flow smoothly.

Although it has some New Age aspects to it, it transcends any religion or dogma, and is, quite simply, completely beautiful.I want to buy it now, for my two teenaged children to cherish and keep. I want them to know that even though I often want to wring their respective teenaged necks, this is what they mean to me--every single word in this glorious book. I have never felt so moved over a baby gift as I am over this one. It is truly a gift of the heart, not only for me, but for anyone who is, or who has just become, a parent.Sometimes we forget just how much of a celebration the arrival of a new child can be. "On the Day You Were Born" is meant to remind us, and our children, now and forever. What a wonderful keepsake!!
