The book is very funny, and there were many panels that make me laugh out loud, literally. My fellow commuters were probably wondering what was so funny! ;)I don't know why the product description refers to the book as "kid targeted," since that implies that the comics are geared towards children. That is not the case; many of these cartoons can be appreciated only by someone with experience in the school of life. Is "Peanuts," a comic strip for kids? No! So it's important to remember that just because the comic strip's characters are children does not means that the humor is targeted at children. It might be more appropriate to refer to the book as "parent targeted," but that isn't exactly correct either, since people who aren't parents will enjoy it, too.Take for example, the comic that has Jason, the youngest boy, learning how to toss popcorn into the air and catch it in his mouth. After a couple of failed attempts, he catches a popped kernel in his mouth, leading to a mighty celebration. The strip pans out to show a floor buried in missed popcorn kernels. His mother, with popped kernels up to her hips, and a very put-upon expression, says, "Congratulations, here's the vacuum." And Jason replies, "Oh fine. Squash my moment." If you think that's funny, you'll enjoy the collection. This is a very well presented electronic version of a comic strip. The comics are easy to read on the Kindle Fire. Each strip is shown in a four-panel presentation (mostly) on a single page of the Kindle. The length compares favorably to other comic strip book collections, and there are approximately 125 comics in the collection.

Always loved the Foxtrot comics when I was a kid. Even now as I've gotten older I still enjoy reading them. I've always loved how the family always seemed to be so dysfunctional yet cooperative as well. Jason always reaching new levels of annoyance with his toys to torment Paige would ways put a smile on my face. Peter always being an bottomless pit and yet the father was always the one with weight problems always stuck out to me. Glad I read this comic and hope Bill Amend will have more in the future to read.

I like all the geeky jokes. BIll Amend has always been one of my favorites. 5 more words are required apparently. Thanks Amazon.

Since I have enjoyed FoxTrot from the beginning, It is easy to say the Bill Amend has done it again. I laughed my way through the book and will visit it again for certain.

cute book- funny comics

I have always looked forward to Foxtrot in the daily comics. I read them in a sequence that leaves the best to last and Foxrot is always near the end. I recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys a good comic.

This is a decently long collection of non-Sunday Foxtrot strips. It's Foxtrot, so it's funny. I look forward to the day when the complete collection is available. It's nice to be able to read comics on an e-ink screen; I don't enjoy reading on an LCD.

Gave this to my 9yo as a present. I thought it would be fun for him, but it turned out to be one of his most favorite gifts this year. he would not stop laughing! Highly recommended.

Review

“This is as compelling a story as you would ever want to read...This book is different in its passion and its presentation. It is worth your time and you won't be disappointed. Once We Were Brothers is a new look at an old story, and it will stay with you long after you have finished it.” ―Jackie K Cooper, Huffington Post"A novel of survival, justice and redemption... riveting." ―Chicago Tribune, on Once We Were Brothers“The phenomenal triumph of lawyer-author John Grisham's legal thrillers has spawned surprisingly few successful emulators; however, Chicago attorney Balson's first novel, while featuring a young lawyer heroine, Catherine Lockhart, who sees her bar admission as a license to further justice, is no simple imitation of Grisham's entertaining potboilers..., this novel is uplifting and moving, intelligently written and featuring historically accurate context and an unusual insight into human character and motivations. Highly recommended for all readers.” ―Library Journal (starred)“Balson does a number of things superbly: he crafts a highly readable plotline and makes great use of the Chicago backdrop…many will enjoy this gripping novel for its narrative drive and its emotional storytelling.” ―Booklist“The author describes the atrocities of wartime Poland and the beautiful, eternal romance between Ben Solomon and his wife, Hannah. Balson's first novel is hard to put down.” ―The Jewish Book World“A legal thriller...a reader knows he's writing from the inside. ” ―Chicago Jewish Star

In the early 2000s, a very rich and powerful Chicago octogenarian is accused of being a Nazi butcher from WWII Poland…..accused by another old man who claims to have know him personally, seven decades earlier.Masterful job weaving together the present-day lives of all the characters, with the history of the terrible German scourge of Poland during the war. Because this story seemed so personal and first-hand, I felt for sure that the author must have been a Polish holocaust survivor…or at least someone who was there to witness events like those portrayed in the story. Turns out that the author is a Chicago lawyer, with no direct connection to WWII Poland. This is great historical fiction, well written/edited. Characters are fully developed, likable (or hate-abe) and totally believable. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read……I just couldn’t put it down. Looking for much more from this author. Most highly recommended for history nuts (like me).

This first book by this author was a great debut novel - one of the best books I've read this year. Caution: based on this book I bought the author's second novel and didn't enjoy it all. Maybe he expended all his writing skills in this one - anyway, I digress. The story begins with an elderly Jew going to the opera with a replica gun and confronting one of the city's leading wealthy businessmen/benefactors. He accuses him of being a Nazi war criminal, and so the story begins. Suffice it to say that he faces an uphill battle proving his accusation, but he is fortunate to catch the interest of a sort of down on her luck female attorney, and subsequently her erstwhile private investigator friend/boyfriend, and the story takes us on a page-turning ride through his revelations of Nazi Germany, his insistence that he is certain of his accusation, and the building up of the case and evidence that ultimately brings the book to a compelling climax. The good characters are likable, the bad characters are just the right degree of unlikable and none of them are one-dimensional or perfect. The book rings true. You will get hooked on the story, you might shed a tear or two, but ultimately you will feel fortunate for having known these characters. I strongly recommend this book.

I rarely read books or watch films that feature Nazi Germany; it's too painful for me. I was born in 1938, and some of my father's people in Poland were sent to concentration camps, in which they dealt with very unpleasant treatment. Fortunately, they survived, and my dad made himself responsible for getting them into the USA, where they lived as proud American citizens until they passed away several years ago. While this book deals with the way Polish Jews were treated by the Nazis, it was mainly a legal thriller. The story was very well developed--with so many really interesting characters.I'd recommend it to anyone of any age.

There is a lot about the structure of the book that makes a gripping story less gripping. The lawyer character from whose POV we find out about the protagonist's backstory seems kind of flat and distracting when compared to the the characters in the bits of the book set in Poland, and weirdly the antagonist is also poorly fleshed out. We don't get much of a sense of how he went (psychologically speaking) from an ally to his Jewish neighbors to a Jew-hunting NAZI beyond the bare facts of what he did and when he did it. Similarly, Rosenzweig as we meet him in old age remains rather opaque to the reader; I would have liked for the author to show us more of how Rosenzweig kept his mask on and how he justified it to himself. It seemed to me there was too much 'tell' and not enough 'show' to that aspect of the book.If you manage to get past those problems (I ended up skimming anything that didn't involve Ben Solomon), there's a great read here. This book is clearly the product of a lot of research, and when you're in the past with Ben Solomon, you're VERY much present and riveted. I'm glad I read it and would recommend it to a friend. It's a solid four stars worth of read, but for that fifth star, I'd like to see the author focus less on his POV character and more on the two men in the title - former brothers turned against each other by war and a toxic, antisemitic culture.

In 2004, Ben Solomon, a Holocaust survivor, sees a wealthy and powerful businessman on TV and recognizes him as a Nazi soldier that committed atrosities against him and his family during the Holocaust. Ben wants justice to be served for his loved ones, so he hires a lawyer named Catherine but she does not want the case. Ben tells Catherine his account of WWII, which causes Catherine to succumb and represent him up against the richest man in Chicago. Only Catherine and her best friend Liam believe Ben's narrative account that makes the richest man in Chicago out as a Nazi monster. Catherine is attacked professionally for taking on Ben's case, and struggles with accepting the moral reward rather than the money. This novel does not go into explicit and graphic elements that encompassed the Holocaust. It uses Ben's narrative as the historical fiction aspect. It is a legal thriller combined with historical fiction.

There were aspects of this book that I liked a great deal, and others, not as much. The story itself kept my interest--reading about the conditions for Jews in Poland in the late '30s and 40s was horrifying, but accurate. What I didn't buy so much was the convention of how the story was told: if the attorney working for a large firm in Chicago was as busy as she professed to be, I just don't think she would have embarked on giving Ben so much time to tell his story. I also found it a stretch that a man in his 80s would have such complete recall, down to the conversations held, 60 to 70 years prior. It was well written overall, and I'd recommend but with these reservations.
