Great stuff. I enjoyed reading all of them. Different type characters and different kinds of mystery but I loved them all. I will certainly recommend this collection of stories. Great stuff keep up the great writing.

I do enjoyed reading this book of action stories. I was a great brake from your usual Christmas stories. I love the short stories at this time of year. Everyone is busy. I find to is so hard to get into a longer adventures.

Each story was very different, with a good range of settings and characters. The last story was suspenseful and I found it to be my favorite.

The narrative is stilted. The authors tell the reader rather than letting the chracters reveal the story and their thoughts.

A wonderful collection of suspense stories by several of my favorite authors......for someone not acquainted with these authors this would be a great way to check out the writing styles of each. Each novella was so exciting that I wanted them find more like them.

The stories in this book were very good. I especially enjoyed the first one and the last one. Great mysteries.

Definitely one of the best books I've read about politics and policy in the U.S. government. The author provides a detailed account of the creation of the Dodd-Frank bill, which imposed new laws and regulations over the country's financial system. For a reader like me who has read dozens of books over the years trying to understand the workings of our government amid the growing problems we are facing, this book serves as a valuable tool in understanding why things aren't getting done. The final chapter, entitled "Still Broken," is worth the cost of the book alone — it assesses the reasons for the dysfunction and lack of will to move the country forward, and also explains the current motivations of each political party (HINT: one faction has zero interest in governing at all). Thus the negative reputation the Congress has earned. I will leave you with a few quotes from the last chapter: "Legislating is no longer the principal preoccupation of our legislators —politics is." Also, "...in the era of partisan warfare , substantive leadership in Congress has become as rare as bipartisan harmony. Its decline has come with the ascendency of politics over policy that has transformed the House and Senate over the last generation."If you are sick and tired of how things are run in our U.S. government, and you want to further educate yourself on the "how's" and "why's" things aren't getting done, then be a responsible citizen and start reading books like these, and get out of your bubble of social media and corporate media that barely does a decent job of properly informing you.

I have been studying the substance of the Dodd Frank act elsewhere (see Regulating Wall Street by Acharya, et al., a nice solid introduction). I teach law but had not walked through a recent end-to-end blow-by-blow of the "sausage-making" of federal legislation. I guess I wanted more legal substance here, in terms of who wrote what and why, but (though some fair amount of that is here) this is quintessentially not about the financial/theoretical complexities (vis a vis legislating) so much as it is (as advertised) a book at the Congress member-to-member and house-to-house level, and gives a cogent view of that world, and how things get done. So, it did fulfill my expectations. I wouldn't call it great storytelling, but it has a workmanlike tone, detail and pace of events. This is a good opportunity to express my admiration and gratitude for the staffers who do so much work. As with many businesses, we tend to mostly see the figureheads, but the importance of the staffers (who are, in Congress, undercompensated by any measure of the modern financial world they are affecting) is on display here. Also, we get to see some congress members' personalities as waffling around, making friendly assurances and then being nudged in other directions by key staffers, with their message wandering around. There are many different levels of intelligence and ability on display here.

Recommend the book if you are a political "junkie". Act of Congress—the newest book from longtime Washington Post reporter and editor Robert G. Kaiser—it's an attempt to explain this contradiction: How can the most productive Congress since the 1970s also stand as the most dysfunctional in more than a century? His case study is the successful two-year effort to pass financial reform and deal with the regulatory aftermath of the economic crisis.

This author takes a particular situation and weaves into the story a real description of the workings of Congress. A lot of it I knew, but this author tells it like it is. For many readers it will be shocking. For cynics who think it is even worse, they will be disappointed in this. But if things are to get done in politics, a perfectionist is not being realistic. Deals have to be made. Factions need to be catered to. To get things done pragmatists are required. Barney Frank, about whom most of this book is about, was a pragmatist. Idealists, who won't compromise, have no business in Congress. This book shows how a pragmatist got something done. What was done is not perfect, but is a good deal better than nothing.

Long-time Washington reporter Kaiser has reported a dismal story of dysfunctional Congress, rife with partisan aggression, filled with campaign-fund raisers, empty of policy makers and virtual blank slates regarding the laws it passes. Any informed citizen is vaguely aware of this, but Kaiser's detailed reporting of the passage of the Dodd-Frank finance bill brings these problems together to show us what a true horror story Congress is right now. I would have preferred more focus on the substance of the legislation, and the book has a few earmarks of a newspaper reporter's difficulty with sustained narrative, but these are quibbles. It's a cliche, but true: every American citizen needs to know the ills of our legislative branch and how extraordinarily complex any solution is.

Planet Dead is my attempt to solve a problem I had with the horror genre. I love horror movies, books, tv shows and comics but as a person of color, I noticed there are very few horror related titles that surround people from different backgrounds.Most horror movies have a white female lead, who at times starts off weak and comes out strong. Which there is nothing wrong with that, but I wanted a strong female that wasn't made strong by the horrors she saw, but by the life, she lived. I wanted a person of color so I could show the world people of color are just as strong as any other group. They can be heroes and villains, they can be complex in many ways.The horror genre leads you to believe that people of color can only die first or be the comic relief. Planet Dead is here to break down that old thought process and give people of color heroes they can relate to, all while giving the world and zombie fans a bad ass story. So pick it up and see a new face in horror.

I was worried this would be a POC manifesto, but Barley wrote his characters as people, not as political statements, so thumbs up for that. Unfortunately, I didn't like Catherine much. Why does strength have to equate cold and ruthless? As a woman, much of my strength is determination, loving through pain and heartbreak, nurturing and the grit to attempt the unfamiliar. I actually liked the supporting character Sue much better. Her character arc showed her evolution as a person and she was more human to me, than Mrs. Briggs ( Catherine) I had issues with a "Barbie" character and the name Sue. Susie, even Susan, would have fit better. That's just me. It"s a fairly solid read, with good action and zombie kills. I like that the women rescue themselves. Hated the disposable characters. Let's just say don't get attached to anyone but Catherine. Ends on a cliffhanger, IMO, warn your readers. Otherwise it is a cheap marketing gimmick. Not much real life details, food, water, bathroom. Still, a fun read, not a serious dystopian/zombie. If that's a thing!

FINALLY ! A really strong female lead that will kick butts and forget about the names. A mom who focused on reuniting with her family and lets nothing bad or crazy stand in her way. Characters are well-fleshed out ( no zombie pun intended ). Sue is a perfect foil to Catherine as she is the quintessential epitome of the dumb blonde-all girly ,Miss Sunshine , "the sun'll come out tomorrow " type. I love the South so Georgia is the perfect setting for me as it seems most zombie books are taking place in the North in big cities. If you are looking for the perfect female protagonist dealing with real life obstacles in an insane setting, read this book ! You will NOT be disappointed.

This is a great ZA story, if you like your women strong and fearless you will find no better example than Catherine Briggs. Catherine takes on the dead and the living with no mercy, life set her up to fight and survive and she will. There is a lot of great action and Z killing but also some sick stuff that you would expect from the living, the ones who think the ZA was created to let them be themselves, as vile as they are. There are more books to come in this series, I just hope we haven't seen the last of Catherine, I love her.

I discovered this bloody gem via Instagram; some of my fave indie horror authors had been mentioning it, so I started following the author. I was intrigued enough to jump into it, and I am so glad I did.Catherine Briggs is an utter badass, but she’s not one-dimensional by any means. She has scars, fears... she has a past. But now the world has gone zombie, and she finds herself thrown in with a cast of fellow survivors who comprise quite an unlikely, motley crew. She doesn’t want their delays and their baggage; she’s on a mission to find her family. But she might need them almost as much as they need her. Almost.It’s a super fun blend of frantic-paced action, the dark side of humanity, emotional scenes, twists, and witty dialogue. Much like with movies, people as a whole seem to have forgotten how to just have fun with their entertainment. And this was fun. Another bonus is the diversity, full of PoC characters. It’s about time we saw a strong, nuanced black woman protagonist in the horror genre. It’s just too rare. Representation matters.I do have some critiques, but only because I feel like this series - and especially this author - could really go far, and deserve to. Let me preface by saying that I read a TON of books, both traditional and indie, and that this book is one of the better edited indies I’ve read in a while. I understand; editing is expensive, and it’s not as important as the story. We know what we’re getting and this is how we can support our fave indie authors as they get their feet under them. This author clearly works his ass off and is very passionate about his work, and he, like many others, should be given a chance.-So yes, I would recommend a good professional editor to help with the polishing and just tightening and cleaning everything up. This book deserves it.-One thing that many readers find difficult to deal with is head hopping. It’s a quirky narrative style that sometimes works, when pulled off masterfully for that style, but 99% of the time is just confusing. If each chapter could be dedicated to a certain single character’s POV when it’s relevant, but sticking mostly with Catherine, it would be much stronger.-There is a bit of deus ex machina throughout this book in the form of characters who have stumbled into each other by happenstance, just happening to have some kind of history with each other or each others’ families. It was coincidental with one, but then there’s another and it kind of interrupted the suspense of disbelief. But this is only the first book, so maybe these coincidences weren’t actually coincidences at all. We shall see!-My only other critique is the character development. Perhaps because of the head hopping, I had a difficult time really grasping some of the characters’ motivations and personalities. I wanted to get to know this eccentric cast of people but they always seemed to be sort of at arm’s length, if that makes sense. Like I said, maybe just the head hopping is at fault, because it jumps into certain characters who would otherwise just be observed by the protagonist, but we don’t get a long enough or clear enough peek inside their mind to get to truly know them before the perspective jumps to someone else.I only mention these things to try to offer constructive feedback to the author, not to discourage anyone from reading it. This book is worth it, regardless, and I recommend it! I’m excited to see what’s next on Planet Dead.

I really enjoyed this zombie read.This story is about very strong character named Catherine she's on a mission to find her family but find's little trouble along the way.We also meet sue I kinda liked her. Looks like the zombie apocalypse brings out the crazies and the crazier. I love how this book centers around Catherine a mother trying to reconnect with her family after the Zombie apocalypse and what lengths she goes through to help out others. But of course she seems to run into trouble wherever she goes.

I am not sure if this is a new author but the characters seemed one dimensional, the story line was very predictable with really no surprises, and the action scenes fell flat. I hate leaving bad reviews but I have been reading that the reviews are important to authors so here it is.

This is by far the best cookbook I've seen for the Instant Pot and similar devices. The recipes are interesting, clever and well thought out with an international flare. Might it be a little intimidating for a newbie? Maybe, but persevere and it will be worthwhile and you will learn a lot as you go. I've been using my IP since 2014; Yet, today is the first day I attempted Salmon in the IP. ( I usually make it Sous Vide.) Melissa's Caramel Salmon looked so good I thought I'd give it a try. Frankly, I didn't think I was reading the instructions right, or maybe they left out something, because one of the basics of IP cooking is to always have 1 cup of water in the bottom so it comes to pressure.....But the liquid in the ingredients came to about 5 1/2 tablespoons and the juice of 1/2 lime.....not even enough to cover the bottom of the pot, but, that Salmon was wonderful, with great flavor and texture. I'll certainly be making that again....amazing....I was surprised and happy to see an IP version of Maqluba, a Middle Eastern dish that is time and labor intensive. This is a dish I probably would never attempt on the stove but, I can see trying Melissa's version. Going to hunt down some lamb necks for the Lamb Tagine with Apricots and Olives.There are so many outstanding recipes in this book. The Coconut Curry Chicken looks delicious. Really good instructions for making yogurt in the IP and I like that she does not shy away from using some heavy creme (optional) which really adds to the richness. There are the recipes you expect to see like Chili, pulled pork but, with a Cuban twist, brisket Korean style and of course baby back ribs. I'm looking to try the Duck Confit....There is a Green Persian rice with Tahdig that looks like something you'd see in Ottolenghi books. I'm so bad...I just ordered the non-stick liner for the IP so I can try this and a few others like the Maqluba that looks like it would be easier to unmold in a non stick liner. I didn't even mention the recipes for the soups, risottos, egg and the bean dishes. If you like desserts there is a nice assortment of puddings. I can't say enough nice things about this book. I hope there is a volume 2......

I’ve made Osso Bucco and the Beef Barley Vegetable Soup and both came out great. Keep in mind the title “Dinner in an Instant” doesn’t mean these recipes are fast, just made in an “Instant” pot. Most of the recipes also have alternative instructions in case you want to use a slow cooker aka crockpot instead.So glad to find an IP cookbook that doesn’t rely on ingredients like cans of cream of mushroom soup.Update 11/10/17: I’m still really enjoying this cookbook! I’ve started cooking something from this book each weekend then saving the leftovers for lunches or freezing the leftovers if I don’t get around to eating them in within a few day.The beef and bean chili is a winner. Just made the Vietnamese Chicken + Rice soup tonight and it was delicious. I’ve also been using the recipes for making bone broth, soft and hard boiled eggs, dulce de leche, and steel cut oats.I think there is a good chance that I could end up making almost every recipe in this cookbook - something I don’t really do with other cookbooks, Will definitely check out this authors other books!

I love this book. I’ve made three recipes so far (butter braised potatoes, chicken curry, and black beans with chiles) and they all turned out absolutely delicious. And the time estimates are fairly accurate (given that I prep as I go). I was using my instant pot regularly before, but now I absolutely love it. There aren’t a million recipes, but the ones in the book are carefully selected. I tend to collect cookbooks and this is one of the best I’ve found. Fantastic recipes with approachable ingredients.Update: I’ve continued to use this cookbook with excellent results. I made the Vietnamese chicken soup and the chicken and dumplings. Both were made after a busy day at work and were simple, but absolutely delicious. I have dozens of cookbooks and this one may be my absolute favorite. Great food that’s easy to prepare (I’ve mostly been able to prep as I cook) and tastes amazing. If I could give it more than five stars I would. I’m looking forward to making the broccoli rabe with white beans next. This is one of the few cookbooks where every recipe is a possibility (excluding the recipes with beef and lamb, which I do not eat). I may end up cooking my way through the book.My only minor complaints are that I wish she had included times for common varieties of dried beans (similar to the rice section) and that she would note in the ingredient list if the quantity will be divided (I’ve been adding my own note after dumping in the full amount of butter or oil before realizing it was supposed to be part).

Jacob Blumenfeld is a writer, translator, and philosopher based in Berlin. His popular writings have appeared in the New York Times, Viewpoint Magazine, and the Brooklyn Rail. His academic writings have appeared in the Hegel Bulletin, Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology, the Marx & Philosophy Review of Books and more. He edited and contributed to The Anarchist Turn (2013, Pluto Press), and recently co-translated Communism for Kids (2017, MIT Press). In 2108, he earned his PhD in philosophy from the New School for Social Research with a dissertation on the concept of property.

The author was concise in his evaluation of The Unique and It's Property (better known as The Ego and His Own). I had a hard time putting it down and it should be a must read for anyone who is a 'Stirnerite'.

A brilliant and fascinating read. I couldn’t put it down.

If you are new to Max Stirner's thought, this is an incredible introduction. If you already know Stirner well, still buy this book. In either case, it is an indispensable introduction and provides a lot of original thought.I was someone completely new to Stirner and, to be honest, was revolted after glancing at The Unique and Its Property. But Blumenfeld's book opened my mind to Stirner's ideas and changed my life for the better. That's because Stirner is not just a philosopher thinking about the realm of abstractions, but someone who gave good practical advice on how live and think.I won't get into all of Stirner's ideas and the author's interpretations of them, but this book helped free me. I grew up as a religious fundamentalist and, even following my falling out with it, I still struggled to think outside of the modes I acquired from that time.This book, whether Stirner was right or not on all matters, showed me how to take my life back. It gave me a mental toolkit to own my life in a meaningful way. To refuse to be controlled by mere thoughts and other phantoms that haunt the alienated individual.I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for something worthwhile. This is easily the best book I've read in a long time.

I was hoping/expecting to learn some new, earth-shattering advice about how to strengthen one's marriage. Instead, the first half of the book was spent learning about the history of marriage and about the author's definition of an "all-or-nothing" marriage. The last half of the book had some helpful ideas, but most of them (communicate better, don't rely on your partner to meet all of your needs, etc.) were fairly obvious.

“Post-menopausal” was mentioned exactly once, at the end of a sentence. At the time when relationships are most vulnerable, the author’s GPS finds no location, no road, no town to observe or study. I appreciate the many valuable insights and analyses, but when data is averaged it still only represents one point on the spectrum. I kept waiting to read an example of couples over 60 or lovehacks to mitigate the fallout from bankruptcy, financial ruin, a heart attack or stroke. Will there be a Part 2?

I had very much anticipated the publication of the “All-or-nothing Marriage” and pre-ordered copies for a small seminar I’m teaching on personal relationships and family. This is a great book for many audiences, ranging from scholars and students of marriage and relationships (and from many disciplines) to the avid reader who wants to learn about the state of marriage from one of the top scholars in the scientific field of close relationships. Eli Finkel has produced an excellent, science-based book that begins with a discussion of how marriage has changed, and then moves to presenting advice, grounded in research, on how anyone can improve their marriage (or relationship). Interesting and enjoyable read!
