My 7 year old grandson loves to play baseball. He's in the first grade and had no problem reading this book. He loves these books written by Matt Christopher. The author is able to write to the reading level of young kids which keeps them interested in the book. My grandson did not have any problems retaining what he read and is very excited to read every night before bed. Highly recommend the books written by Matt Christopher.

My six year-old baseball-loving son really liked this book. It has a good message about confidence, and lots of play-by-plays. The book's quite dated -- kids go off to play unsupervised in the town's field, and the boy befriends a strange teenager in his small town -- but it was easy for me to explain these anachronisms to my son, and they give a sweet glimpse of 1950's life. Matt Christopher is no Dickens, but since we have to read sports books in my house, he's good enough for us.

Great first chapter book for my grandsons, just as this collection was for my boys when they were age 8.

Praise God! I'm a talent agent and I'm not supposed to suggest anything to actors. I can't suggest where to get your head shots, where to take a class, or where to get anything but by gosh, I can suggest this book!! I love it! I must confess, I read what I want when I want so I haven't actually read it straight through but I have every other page dog eared so I can remember the good stuff on it. This book sits on my desk. When I interview actors, I ask if they have read this book. If they haven't, I always suggest it to them because it is the most comprehensive guide they can use to be the type of actor an agent and casting director would want to work with. Yes, you can find out info on the street but wouldn't you rather hear it from someone who is actually in the game every day and who is making a living as a casting director? Bonnie Gillespie has a much kinder soul and uses her verbiage far gentler than I ever would and that's why I suggest her book. I would probably break an actors will to go on if I told them what they really needed to do to make it happen but Bonnie has such a lovely way of telling an actor what to do that it downright makes me feel like the bitter agent that I didn't set out to be because actors just don't listen to me:) Every single chapter I found myself saying "yes!", "you tell 'em!", "thank you for explaining this!", and the list goes on. She was like on my team and reading it I felt like her cheerleader:) Yes, get really great head shots, yes, meet casting directors and give agents something to pitch and work with, and yes, be a well rounded person who people like and want to work with. I appreciated her positivity, her point of view, and candor. Please actors, read this book and follow the advice in it so you can have the best shot at being successful actors. Thank you, Bonnie for helping to make my job easier!

Bonnie is a genius. Her book is jam-packed with a thoughtful, intelligent approach to pursuing a career that otherwise seems to depend entirely on luck. She will show you how it can be done, if you're willing to work for it. The book can be a little overwhelming at times, but it is so thorough, that any time you're wondering "What should I do today to move closer to my dream of being an actor?", she will have an answer, no matter where you are in your acting career. She presents a sharing-based world of acting, where we help each other out, and encourages you to do research on your work so you can move through the ranks faster. I am just starting out as a serious actress, but I feel like I have a detailed roadmap of where I'm going after reading this book, and I expect to refer to it frequently in the years to come. Bonus: she has many additional and excellent resources on her website, and through her facebook group. So reading the book is just the tip of the iceberg. This was great preparation before I came to Hollywood. It totally made sense like it would work. Unfortunately, a lot of advice: Actors Access, workshops, student films, they really get you very little if any paid work or representation. I did get a good commercial agent by following some advice in this book, but commercial rep is fairly easy to get if you have the right look. If you are CLUELESS about PROFESSIONAL ACTING, get this book. You DON'T want to go into this business without a clue, you will get ripped off and taken advantage off!!!!If you are someone like me who has been in the biz for at least a few years, you really should check out a book called "Actors Trade Secrets" by Erica Hoo. She's not the soft, fluffy type though; she is also a casting professional AND actress. What I love about Erica is that she knows how many half-truths are told to actors as the answer. You know paid workshops, get new headshots, send tons of post cards, get a reel, and such. I followed a lot of that very COSTLY advice in popular actor books such as Self-Management and it wasn't working. It wasn't until I bought "Actors Trade Secrets" that I understood why. "Self-Management" got me my commercial agent, which I am SOOOO grateful for. But I had no way to attract a Theatrical agent until I read "Actors Trade Secrets." Boy was that a wake up call!

Some of this is common sense, some of it confirms what you may have already thought of or guessed at but you will definitely learn quite a few new strategies so the price of the book will be made back in spades at some point in your career if you decide to stick with acting. This book was well thought out and will be something different for each actor, as it should be, but it applies to all actors in general. If your just starting out this is a must have book. I found it to be a very useful resource book that I know I will turn back to again and again for reference and refreshers.

I think this is a great book. I think it really helps to read a book like this when learning MPI. I've found I'm taking a few approaches that are not emphasized in the book - for example using the 'v' functions like Scatterv, Gatherv, although they are mentioned in the book, I could use examples that make use of them, and other functions that are mentioned. Also some MPI 3.0 functions are not mentioned, and my understanding is the C++ MPI bindings, which the book uses a substantial amount of space to cover, have been deprecated, so yes, I really like it, but I would update it, or get the MPI 3.0 standard doc for $25 as well, or the free pdf that the committee makes, to get a more complete MPI reference.

I bought this book for a course on Parallel Computing for which we did some basic MPI programming. This book was useful to a great extent in describing the syntax of the MPI routines as well as in providing ample examples. To my knowledge, it doesn't contain advanced MPI concepts but it is good in explaining the basics of MPI if you are a beginner.

The book came clean. It came brand new which was surprising to me when I got it.

This book is an excellent introduction to programming with the MPI. It gradually introduces concepts from the simple to the complex. This is done with examples that illustrate the use of different techniques. The examples include the code to implement them. The programming examples alternate between Fortran 90, C, and C++. However, after giving the example in one language, the bindings for the MPI functions in the other two languages are presented. In addition, the programming examples in either language are easily understood. Although my first choice of programming language is Fortran (and I have very basic knowledge or C), I was able to follow the examples in C and C++ and to write their equivalents in Fortran so I could test them on our computers.

What better choice could I have made than The Art of Language Invention by David J. Peterson?Back when I was a kid, one of my favorite books was Dougal Dixon’s After Man: a Zoology of the Future. As an exercise in speculative biology, the book is responsible for maybe 90% of my enthusiasm about evolution, anatomy, and animal behavior. The fact that I know anything about those subjects at all is because I was enthusiastic for them, which puts Dixon to blame for most of what I know about the natural world. When I read The Art of Language Invention, the same thing happened with linguistics.You can’t create a good made-up language without knowing about real languages. Through the lens of his invented languages and his experience using them, Peterson educates the reader about the forces that shape the way we speak—a practical gift wrapped in shiny packaging. Like all good speculation, The Art of Language Invention educates and inspires as much as it entertains.And it IS entertaining, if for no other reason than the cat and onion jokes.Go read it. I expect to see your new language on my desk by Monday.

If you’ve ever thought about creating a language, but didn’t know where to start, or you were intimidated or overwhelmed by the masses of terminology or “denseness” of other books, start here. If you’ve been creating languages for decades and just need a fresh perspective, a good laugh, or some commiseration, check this out. If you’re a linguistics student struggling with the basics, and your Intro to Linguistics reading is so dry you can’t choke it down, this could easily pass as a funny, entertaining, and fairly complete Linguistics 101 textbook, with some conlanging on the side.

I came across this title while reviewing a fascinating game in Kickstarter called "Dialect." When I was a teenager, I discovered Tolkien and, through Tolkien, the idea of constructed languages ("conlanging"). I was hooked, and my ambition was to become a linguist. While those ambitions faded over time, the interests did not, and this book kept me reading from front to back. The author's sense of humor as well as his enthusiasm for the work is infectious. The details he provides give a fantastic glimpse into the workings of language and writing, as well as a fascinating history of the art form.

If you have the patience yo go through several chapters of the anatomy of a language, before getting to the nitty gritty of how to build one, then this book is perfect for you. Despite the fact that I gook several linguistics courses during my Bachelors and masters degrees, I really struggled with the first part of the book. It can be daunting, with dozens of terms that only a linguist would recognize, but it had to be covered if one were to attempt constructing a decent language. The latter part was quite interesting, and I was especially fascinated by font creation. Now I'm ready to construct my first language (a hybrid of several languages as a result of 500 years of several cultures cohabiting on one new colonized planet.) Here goes.

The information provided (that I could get to) is incredible, especially for world building, but the Kindle version is full of formatting errors (or at least my version was). Pages missing, pages repeated, and other oddities throughout the first quarter of the book (I couldn't get past that for frustration, but I will go back and try again, because the gems in there are awesome). It was incredibly difficult to go through to get to the meat of the book. As a linguist and a polymath, I was champing at the bit to read this one, but the constant errors in pagination made it a slog. I hope the errors get corrected so that I can get to the good stuff, because Mr. Peterson's prose and knowledge certainly bear looking into.

I create languages for fun. This book validated a lot of what I was already doing and gave new and brilliant ideas and instruction that I'll definitely use in the future. It's a bit difficult to read if you aren't already passionate about language, linguistics, or how words work, but if you are, this is definitely worth reading.

Peterson is gifted in the area of language creation. I read part of this book as an excerpt and decided it would be well worth the purchase. I have enjoyed this book a lot, I've learned a lot, and I was entertained through the entire read. This will be one I keep within reach and refer to again and again.

I've been working on my own language since a high-school game I played with a friend. More recently I've been trying to make it realistic, but I just didn't know enough about languages. This book filled in quite a few holes in my knowledge! I overhauled my whole language from the roots up and I feel far more confident in it!

Whether you are a mature Christian or early in your walk you will cherish this book. The premise of the book is to memorize and help the reader store up verses for bleak times. Wish I could memorize. The book failed me in this regard. However, it is one of the best morning devotionals I have ever found. Some of the 100 verses are the expected ones the ones we know and love. Many are new to me especially as stand alone verses. All of the selected 100 are meaningful and speak to your heart. Morgan gives memorable insight into each verse with his thoughts, and additional information about the times, people and meanings. I would urge you to give this book to someone you are ministering. There are many pages at the beginning instructing the reader in ways to memorize. This is important but getting to the meat is more important. I feel that each person who purchases this book will count it as a treasure.

I recently decided to buy this one. I had been thinking about buying it for a couple of years at least. I don't regret my decision. I found the book to be well-organized, practical, and substantive.In the first part of the book, Morgan shares WHY believers should memorize Scripture. He concludes this section by sharing ten tips for HOW to memorize Scripture. His list begins with, "First, make up your mind you can memorize just one verse. That’s all. Just one. (Of course, if you can memorize one verse, you can memorize two.)" I believe Morgan is familiar with excuses and knows how intimidating the idea of memorizing verses can be.In the second part of the book is the heart of the book. In this section, Morgan shares one hundred Bible Verses that he believes everyone should know by heart. Its one of the best books in my library. I bought it on Kindle. The verse selections are excellent. Of course to decide on 100 verses many may have different opinions on which 100 to choose from. But the Authors choices are great ! And why limit to these 100 ? Besides these verses the author encourages us to know by heart as much of God's words as possible ! I've found that I am able to memorize more and more verses with the help of God! He will help us to know by heart! This book helped me enormously to motivate me and guide to delve deeper and to memorize the bible and to keep the words of God in my heart ! Along with the verses there are excellent life examples and explanations regarding the selected verses. Each verse may be accompanied by its historical background. Why the verse is important, and how we can apply that verse to our lives. This book has definitely brought me closer to God. When I find myself forgetting the verses, I go back to this book, to refresh. And the materials in this book is so fresh that each time I read it I always learn something new. Of course the only book that is fresh and alive and powerful is the bible! I am just saying this is a very wonderful resource for anyone seeking God and wanting to understand and commit to memory the treasure of the Word of God. So helpful to get started in for anyone who has not yet tried to memorize the bible yet. But also for veterans students of the bible as well, to see some of the verses in a different perspective. Sometimes I also use this book in my devotional times as well. Again Awesome. I hope you will get his book and that it helps you like it did me.

I found this book - it was recommended to me by Amazon - just before Christmas. Well, I decided to do something for me, to improve the inner me, this year for my New Years resolution, and so I am memorizing all 100 of these verses in 2012. Some of them I already knew, and many I was familiar with but didn't have memorized, so I'm committing all of these to memory. It's wonderful! It's better than meditation, and it can take my mind off my worries, and I feel so peaceful and calm after "reciting" my memory verses--I'm doing nine a month, a new one every three days, and at the end of the month, I just recite them several times a day until I'm ready to start my next "monthly bundle." This has to be the best thing I've ever done, and these verses are truly wonderful!

I listeded to this on Audio and appreciate the fact that the author read it herself. Unfortunately I found it to be slow-moving and ultimately not very interesting. It was nice to learn that Kennedy was a warm, kind person who treated her well and that his wife Carolyn was also a kindhearted girl's girl who loved to plop down on the couch for a chat. Maybe this felt a bit flat to me because I had just finished the poetic and beautifully written book What Remains by Carole Radziwell and this could not compare. If you are interested in learning about John and Carolyn from an insider, and you appreciate a well-written book, I encourage you to give that one a try.

While exact, word-for-word conversations from so many years ago would be difficult for anyone to recall, with Ms Terenzio you get the idea. John and Carolyn were fascinating and tragic. This book will tell you just enough without delving into any of the grittier details that are none of our business (and frankly, make them more human and relatable to me). As a kid on the cusp of adulthood when they died, I still see John as a perfect if not typically imperfect man, and Carolyn, well...I wanted to emulate her style then and would have loved to watch it evolve to today (I imagine her with full brows teaching all of us victims of the skinny 90s brow trend what's what...)One gets the sense that the author is a bit of a Forrest Gump-type character in the lives of John and Carolyn. Most notable in times like how they were on the phone consulting with her in their apartment just before John famously asked the paparazzi to leave his new wife alone. But hey, I wasn't there so who am I to say it didn't happen. There is no doubt that the author was close to John, and positively adored him, so if you are looking for an affirming testament to his roguish, charming character, with flaws and all, this is your book. Carolyn by all accounts (all two of them that I have read by people who actually knew her), seems to have been warm and friendly and frankly, looking for allies in John's crazy world- and more comfortable with less fancy folks...folks with humbler upbringings like her own. If their problems were as ugly as you might read in other books, you won't get any dirty here. No amount of dirt, at any rate, can erase what a tragedy it for them to go so unexpectedly, and while they were so young and full of promise.

Hated this; a poorly written tale by a hanger on with little detail and insight. More about the author and her needs and ambitions than about the couple. Frankly I am embarrassed I bought such a book designed only to make money for the author. We need to stay out of this late couple's life.

I not only loved this book, I also needed this book. It was incredibly cathartic. I'm a professional writer, and I disagree with everyone who said it wasn't well written. It is. For people who say there is too much about the author: she's the protagonist! The book is about her journey. I've been in show biz for many years, and I know what it's like when you're the nobody standing next to the person everyone worships. It's a complicated thing to try to live with, and that is what the book is about. The pictures we get of John and Carolyn are so honest and frank, I feel like I now know them. I read this book in two sittings, and it's going to stay with me for a long long time.

Before ordering this book, other reviews had expressed disappointment in the fact that the book is about the author - not the life of John Kennedy. It ends up capturing a 5-year period of Kennedy's life when he headed up "George" magazine in NY. However, the literal day to day description of those 5 years from the perspective of his personal "admin. assistant" tells you more about the "person" of John Kennedy and his wife Carolyn than any media story ever has - in my opinion. I couldn't put this book down - didn't get much done in my daily life until I finished it!!! I felt that she beautifully captured the "real" guy JFK Jr. and gives the reader a candid view of the private persona versus the world's perception. I was completely fascinated because I've always believed that there is a real person behind all of the "HYPE".
