As Arthur Shappey would this, this was brilliant.Martin, Douglas, Carolyn, Arthur, and occasionally Herc, a flying piano, a terrifying cat, or otters make this amazing BBC programme. The level of humour is combined with plights that everyone can relate with. Sure, we may not be able to understand the terror of a bird strike, but getting 'enough wrong ends of the stick to make the entire wrong end of the forest', wondering about dating, or even playing cheerful word games amongst friends... How could this radio programme go wrong?I highly recommend this to any fan of BBC Radio Comedy, any fan of Stephanie Cole/Roger Allam/Benedict Cumberbatch/John Finnemore, or anyone who really just needs a laugh.Brilliant series. A major hit.
This positive production for the BBC is so pleasantly, reliably clever that the dazzled bean struggles to muster sufficient praise. Particularly I find it difficult reconciling my terror of airplanes and flying with John Finnemore's somehow witty and gut-bustingly hilarious portrayal of a plane wing catching afire, the old bird's usually unprofessional pilots reacting with intelligence and true precision, tragedy narrowly averted by their astonishingly cool presence of mind....Oh, but that's skipping ahead and a bit spoilery. Background: I bought this collected series for a semi-solo road trip from Pittsburgh to Chicago (did I perchance mention that I despise passenger aviation?) and henceforth, will loudly proclaim to the heavens that the distractions of Surprising Rice, Spanish Animal Sounds, and the Travelling Lemon more than once saved my (tenuous) sanity during the desperately dull jaunt across the plains of Indiana and Ohio. I had already reveled in some of the merry adventures of MJN Air, while others I had not yet encountered; yet throughout, the mellifluous voices of Allam, Cole, Cumberbatch, and Finnemore were as fresh and delightful rain to the parched, humorless desert of my car's interior.....Okay, all silliness aside, this show really is brilliant, and unquestionably prevented terrible acts of road rage during heavy traffic on I-90. Fun fact: it's cheaper to buy the first three series together than it is to buy the third series alone, plus the third series is unbelievably difficult to get ahold of. So I splurged on this collected set for my road trip (after gifting the first two series to a very grateful Cumberbunny friend.) I have only good things to say about shipping, delivery, packaging, etc. - couldn't be happier. And as to the show itself, I didn't think it was possible for Series 3 to be funnier than the first two, BUT IT IS. While exiting Cleveland, I had to pull the car over because I was laughing so hard I was crying, thanks to Douglas's pursuit of the polar bears in "Qikiqtarjuaq." I'm only sad that Series 5 will be the last. A million praises be unto Cabin Pressure.
Wonderfully written comedy with a terrific cast. The characters are quite funny, and there are loads of little verbal gems in each episode. I listen to these in my car as I shuttle my kids around, and even my 16-year-old son enjoys them.ETA: my son downloaded Season 4 for me, as a Mother's Day present, and it continues to delight all of us. The disks are passed back and forth between our two cars and we have begun, nerdily enough, to employ Pressurized expressions around the house. "I carried the sheep, I climbed the tree..." or "Fizz buzz..." It's been ages since we all enjoyed the same entertainment, so it's really a winner!
I first became aware of this collection while searching Audible for audio books. What a treasure find! So smart, well written and performed. The "Chapters" are short, about 25 minutes each and there are about 6 chapters in each "season". When purchased through Amazon Audible as individual seasons, it was quite reasonable. I tried one then bought all seasons through Audible.However, after listening, I found this "Collected Series" and decided to get the audio CD's. I absolutely laughed to the point of tears at some of the situations this crew got themselves into. Although this is some years old and all actors have moved on to other things, this series is a treasure if you like to laugh.
I originally bought this because I was looking for British Comedy. I was not disappointed. Shenanigans abound on these delightful 30-minute episodes (perfect for my commute to school). I was felt justified buying it because of the acting talents of Benedict Cumberbatch, who I had only seen in serious roles-Khan, Sherlock and those other ones. I was then totally blind-sided with hysterical laughter for the absolute goofiness of John Finnemore, playing Arthur Shappey. He quickly escalated to becoming my favorite character in the series, followed closely by the Roger Allam's mighty skygod Douglas Richardson.
The entire cast does an excellent job on this great radio comedy series. The small airline (one plane, one crew) sure experiences a lot of interesting adventures on their world wide destinations. These stories are so, so funny, especially if you know anything at all about flying a plane. The icing on the cake is to have Benedict Cumberbatch be the Captain of your flights! It saddened me to hear that the show was cancelled (understandable due to the availability of some cast members).
Well-written and well executed. Anything that Finnemore has his hand in can be expected to be good and this whole set is very, very good. Cumberbatch is, of course, adorable. If you have problems with British accents, don't worry, this particular CD set is clearly enunciated and doesn't have any heavy regional accents that can muddy up the sound. My hearing isn't the best and so clarity is really important to me. As for the amount of time you will have to enjoy this set, don't worry! Good long times on each CD, so well-worth the price.
