Probably the best read I've found discussing the Christian Church as a unified body. This is told from the perspective of a doctor with a great appreciation for the miracle of the inner workings of the anatomy. Brand also describes disease states and lets the reader compare those to weaknesses in church and religions. I enjoyed reading this for personal devotion time, but it would also be a good subject matter for a study group. This would be a great gift for a reader in a medical field. The combo writings of Brand and Yancey make this a good value for these two books by two inspiring authors.
I've been reading this in small doses for a long time, because there's so much depth and wisdom here. This particular edition (which I read on my Kindle) was actually a special edition combining two of Brand and Yancey's co-authored works: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made and In His Image.Dr. Paul Brand (1914-2003) was a world-renowned hand surgeon, leprosy physician, missionary and humanitarian who caught the attention of -- and became mentor to -- Christian writer/apologist Philip Yancey. Their relationship in producing this book was best described by Yancey himself: "As a journalist, I gave words to his faith. In exchange, he gave faith to my words."I'm sure that it was especially meaningful to me because of having studied human anatomy in grad school. Others might get bogged down in the medical details, but I loved the way Brand brought the physical and spiritual worlds together as he reflected on the amazing human body and related it to the analogy, often used in the Bible, of Christ as the Head of the Body representing the Church. As Yancey reflects, this likeness "derives from their common source."Yancey's respect and affection for Dr. Paul Brand was evident throughout this book: "You need only meet one saint to believe, to silence the noisy arguments of the world, and I had the inestimable privilege of spending leisurely hours getting to know a distinguished and faithful follower of Jesus. For that, Paul Brand, I thank you."In this book, Brand moves through the body, from skeleton to skin to heart, reflecting on one miracle of Nature after another in terms of its precision, complexity, and marvelous function. Brand finds inspiration everywhere, along with evidence of a Creator with vision beyond imagining. The failure of one type of cell can bring on tragic consequences. Interestingly, the worth of each member is also the aspect most often stressed in biblical imagery of the Body of Christ."One of the things I enjoy about reading on a Kindle is that it's easy to underline/highlight sections and then go back to review them after I've finished the book. The highlighted notes alone are wonderful and inspiring as they weave the threads of Paul Brand's faith with his celebration of the miracle of the human body. It greatly strengthened my appreciation for my own body and opened up thoughtful ways to connect the physical world around me with the spiritual world that I seek to know better.Yancey's wonderful rendering of his mentor's thoughts also left me wishing more than anything that I could have known Dr. Paul Brand.Permalink for this post: [...]. There is so much here it deserves to be read once a year. Dr. Brand (and his Mother before him) was an incredible man and must be an inspiration to all who read of his life and works…..at least he was for me, and obviously for Phillip Yancey. I thought Yancey did an excellent job in bringing us Dr. Brands works. If you like reading this, look up the book "Granny Brand". She was a real pistol and makes all of us in our senior years sit up, take notice, and get to work! I could read that book many times also.
Dr.Brand explains various body systems in simple terms and credits our great God with their amazing design and functionality. He also gives inspirational parallels to life as a Christian. Phillip Yancey is the invisible editor and writer who transcribed Dr.Brand's writings into this very readable and informative work. I generally read books that I can learn from rather than fiction. If that describes you then I think you would enjoy this book.
As a biologist and a Christian, it is hard to find books that so easily piece together faith and science in a way that doesn't seem contrived. Some works force it - this book does not. I was always surprised to see how easily Brand and Yancey took a concept and wove in faith. Great book and a must read for any biologist and Christian - beautiful, heartfelt stories with wonderful correlations to the Christian faith.
This is good but more like separate devotions and sometimes feels like a biology book. Can get a bit scholastic. I enjoyed the biography of Dr. Paul Brand, Ten Fingers for God, much better. I'm glad I read it first. Some of the same stories are mentioned in In the Likeness of God. And some is so much like Paul Yancey it feels a bit wordy and preachy.
Excellent book comparing human's physical body with church body. Very informative, very detailed; I learned many new things both about human anatomy and church functioning. Although there aren't many apologetics or deep spiritual subjects, this book is not about this type of subject. It's more of excellent reference material.
This classic analogy is a bit dated, but so challenging to Christians in the USofA who have little if any cross cultural experience. Those involved in health care will be especially challenged to apply their knowledge of science to understand the teachings of Jesus as recorded in our Bible.In "Fearfully and Wonderfully Made" to focus is on the actual anatomy and Christian living. "In the Image of God" leans more to physilogy, the function and interaction of the parts.Those who are not Christian but interested in teaching and doctrine will gain many insights worth pondering. I hope it will be back in print! TK
