#72,730 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Food delivery by plane into the Alaskan wilderness. . . Not beer or whiskey but canned goods. Yes, the army is requesting a food delivery flown into their secure base. George 'Tank' delivers, poor guy. He has no clue what's going on, not even with army security checking his papers and orders. But he's authorized and as a private in the US Army, he's admitted, and due to a fluke, he stumbles into an unplanned stay.Tank is twenty years old but wise beyond his years. Street smart, but not book smart, honest and loyal, a true friend, and a bit impulsive with a hero complex. He's this chameleon, doing the unexpected because no one sees him coming. In a way he reminds me of Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan, a guy people overlook, just full of surprises, one that keeps overcoming what life throws at him.I was completely blown away by this story, the layers, the secrets unfolding and how everything changes when it's down to the wire, when trust is given and in return loyalty. I'd like to think the marking on Tank's forearms was a reward of sorts, to warn away other 'demons' that Tank is now protected because he is loyal to Zhu. But that's my thought. There's humans and aliens, demons and teenagers, friends and co-workers, plots and counter-plots, the army and civilians, and alien technology. While this one is satisfying by itself, I hope that another book in this world comes out or if it links to her other books in some way. Tap-Dancing the Minefields was well worth the cost, this is a re-read and a keeper. Recommended. - Dan's WifeA couple of weeks and a re-read later. . . . I think the arm markings are some designation. Johns swirls on his face are from the slave ship. So Tank's arm has something to do with Zhu's father, marking John as his. I hope we get another book in this world with these characters.

I love Lyn Gala but for some reason I have not been able to connect to the Aberrant Magic series so it was so nice to have a fun fast trip into a science fiction universe with a number of well developed characters in it. It was nice to see the relationship between Tank and Lev develop but you also wanted to learn more about the other characters (does John watch musicals alone, is there hope for Clyde and his daughters, what is Saddler like off duty, etc.)I also appreciated how the book acknowledged that dealing with traumatic things is well traumatic and there is no quick or magical fix for that and that there is something wrong with continually putting high school kids in danger. I am really hoping to see more of the relationship between the team and to learn more about the aliens and the organic spaceship.

I love Lyn Gala and pre-ordered this. It's a little confusing to start. It definitely feels like book 2 of the series and indeed I went to see if I had missed book one, but no, she's just starting by diving in the deep end. The back story is deep, but it felt a like 5 years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and where were we now...Tank was the strategist of the scooby gang, and now, 5 years later in the military, he meets up with the same terrible artifacts that haunted him in his adolescence... He also meets Lev. The world building is so dense and complex that the romance definitely took a back seat to the plot. Lev has his own complex backstory and his own scooby gang, so to speak, that I never really felt the connection between the two men, instead it felt like an awkward bridge between their two worlds to give the book some structure. However, the two worlds are fascinating and well worth spending time with. I hope there is a real book 2 so we can make some more sense about what is going on. I will preorder that one too! This is just a warning to those who are expecting more of a romance, that isn't what you will find here (though how the boys meet, with the mating hormones flooding, is kinda cute, in a insta lust only in a book kind of way) But those wanting a complex sci fi/military soap opera will be well served.

Rating: 3.5 starsI’m a bit perplexed on how I feel about this book. It was a good story and well written. I liked all the characters. I liked that it was written from both Tank’s and Clyde’s perspective. This was refreshing because Clyde and Tank were not romantically involved in anyway. The world building was great. The author did a good job of immersing you in this world of aliens. I’m not sure why, but it took me a long time to read this story. It didn’t really grab me in the omg I can’t put it down way. I actually kept putting it down. I could only read short sections at a time. The ending picked up a bit with all the action, but still over all I didn’t enjoy it as much as I was hoping to. My hope is that if the author writes another book set in this world, I will enjoy it more now that all the back stories are out of the way. I would definitely read it if for no other reason than to maybe get answers to some unanswered questions remaining at the end of this book.

Lyn Gala always delivers on the worldbuilding and this book is no exception. He main character, Tank, is a somewhat average guy who keeps getting his world turned upside down. That fact that he can roll with that is what makes him extra special. I found myself identifying with him a great deal as he struggles to keep himself and his friends safe while dealing with demons, or is that aliens?, military protocol and the conflicting expectations of the people around him. Truly a memorable and remarkable story full of adventure, romance and humor.

This story was amazing! It read like a blockbuster sci-fi action movie and I had a crystal clear picture of everything in my head as I was reading, down to the most minute of details. The mix of action, drama, humor and romance blended well. I was drawn in from the very first sentence and didn't want to let go when I turned the last page. It looks to be set up as the beginning of a series. I hope so! I would definitely read more about this world. In fact, I have a burning need to read more.Highly, highly recommended.
