A lot of detail is left out of this book. For example, doesn't mention the total cluster involved in getting to certain areas in Colombo (Dutch Museum being a prime example), due to narrow, twisting one-way lanes that confuse even local Uber drivers. Doesn't mention how generally unwalkable Colombo is due to traffic. Fairly useless book; you'd do much better just checking online travel forums.

Good overview and some good info, but this was the first time lodging recommendations from LP steered me wrong. I stayed in a mid-range place the book recommended in Fort Galle that was awful and while I still like LP books and have used them for years, now I look at travel advisor for lodging.

I appreciate that there is a guide out there for Sri Lanka. It did help. However, the Lonely Planet guys really go out of their way to praise hotels, shops, restaurants, etc. that are really dumps. The descriptions of the historic sites are decent, although their history of the hilltop palace at Sigiriya is totally at odds with everything everyone told me while in country. I wish Eyewitness had done a guide on Sri Lanka. Until they do, you may be stuck with the Lonely Planet guide.

Buy the book, not the Kindle version.A travel guide is typically not read cover to cover, but browsed by the reader for relevant and specific information that they need. That is almost impossible to do with a Kindle. There is no way to quickly access specific pages or even find the information one needs. So while the information is good (hence 2 stars)the inability to easily access it makes the Kindle version almost useless.

Went to Sri Lanka Jan 2016 after reading this to prepare. Didn't find reviews accurate at all. Would recommend going with trip advisor recommendations instead.

Incredibly useful, well researched, and loving the new internet extras available.First time going to Sri Lanka and filling very confident based on the information provided by Lonely Planet.

If your going to Sri Lanka, this is a must book to read and carry with you. It is filled with everything you need to know, from places to stay, things to do, and what to expect.Lot of ideas on how and when to travel, customs, and price choices .

Lonely Planet has become virtually useless. They've actually become worse - quality has observably degraded with the introduction of each new addition and this is no exception. It's frustrating.Seems that the spirit of the company has been abandoned - so be it. But for the price, please include a couple of maps. I shoved this guide to the bottom of my luggage and relied on locals + wifi for info. What a rip-off - LP isn't even trying.
