I read this book, as well as Eugene Peterson's "A Long Obedience in the Same Direction", as part of my personal study and preparation for a teaching series on the Psalms of Ascent. While I found Peterson's commentary and explanation more beneficial on average, Josh Moody has provided an enjoyable and accessible read on this collection of psalms. I would recommend this book as a companion devotional to anyone who wants to read a little deeper into the Psalms of Ascent.
The author takes you through the "ascent" Psalms in a very methodical, step by step way, but makes you want to learn more ... what did the Author mean? how does this apply to me? I found it very challenging and it actually has changed my attitude toward some things. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about Scripture but especially how it "talks" to me!!
One hardly knows where to begin with this book. It is supposedly a study of the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). But if you are looking for a book whose author deals with the Scripture in a straightforward manner, attempting to discern what it really says before jumping to far-fetched applications, then this book is not for you.Psalm 122 begins, "I was glad when they said to me, let us go to the house of the Lord." The psalmist clarifies he is speaking of Jerusalem. Moody turns this into a psalm that is supposed to teach us to love our church and resist individualism! The command to "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. May they prosper who love you" becomes simply, "pray for peace." Psalm 134 begins, "If it had not been the Lord who was on our side--" etc. Although the psalm is unquestionably about God's rescue of Israel, Moody concludes: "This psalm is the flight data recorder of the church facing danger." Psalm 125 ends with the words, "Peace be upon Israel." Moody makes Israel irrelevant to his remarks. Psalm 129 states, "May all who hate Zion be put to shame and turned backward!" Moody's interpretation? "He is borrowing from the agricultural images of his day. . . He is saying that he feels like he wants those who have oppressed him to have no fruitfulness."The author is quite determined to eliminate all thought of Israel and Jerusalem in his remarks. Quite obviously he is captive to his preterism. His flights of fancy are more than unhelpful. They make serious exegesis and study of the Bible as God's Word a mockery.

This gave real meaning to the progression of the Psalms of Ascents. Really liked reading and studying with this book!
"The Journey Isn't Over" by Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. is better (except for the overly literal interpretations of what Jerusalem means). Moody's book is a good addition for any study of the Songs of Ascent.
Josh Moody explains how the Psalms of Ascent are relevant for today's world. Though he does give background for each psalm, this book isn't a commentary. "Journey to Joy" looks at what the psalmist is going through--whether positive or negative--in each Psalm of Ascent and helps the reader apply the principles to his or her own life. Pastor Moody helps the believer make the journey to the very center of our relationship with God.
This book will help you on your journey wherever you may be in life right now! Dr. Moody is a highly accomplished speaker and writer. He attempts to walk the talk and is a gift to his College Church parishioners. Buy this book...a fabulous investment!
